Costco Rental Car rates for Hawaii dropped

I’m curious if anybody on TUG has actually rented an electric car and stayed at the Westin Kaanapali recently? For our stay in August I can get a weekly rental for $264 (Bolt or similar). About $120 cheaper than the cheapest ICE car.

I’ve owned a couple of Teslas and am no stranger to the challenges of driving an electric car, and we aren’t planning any long trips like the road to Hana. Just a couple of drives to Wailea and maybe the upcountry. I’m thinking we’d be fine just charging at the resort every day. We’ve been to Maui many times so pretty flexible about our excursions.

Terrible idea or maybe ok?

I did read somewhere there are no superchargers so charging takes time. The island isn't very big so I think you'll be fine as long as you know the Westin has plenty of chargers. I just read it in a review complaint so it could be wrong but maybe you can confirm.

I haven't but did you read my earlier post from someone who did rent an electric vehicle on Maui?

Here it is again. It was posted May 2023.

"Just did an EV rental in Maui and it was very stressful initially. I went to 3 different charge locations on the first full day of vacation and they were all failures - 2 were broken and one was in a hotel lot that charged exorbitant fees for non-guests.

The next day I tried again to find charging, and after 30 minutes on the phone with support I finally got the Aquatic Center fast charger working. The support person had to reset the machine 3 times! Then an aggressive local pulled up in her Nissan leaf and sort of demanded that she be given the charger. Something about she was late for work, only needed it for 10minutes, tourists taking the chargers, etc.

Next we tried a level2 charger in a random shopping center parking lot and again spent 20min on the phone with support because the requisite phone app was unable to complete my new account verification (huge eyeroll at some of the low effort EV apps). This finally worked but I only charged maybe 10% in an hour.

The next day we miraculously we found a fast charger that worked in Piilani shopping center. No broken parts, no aggressive locals, no calls to support for system reboots. I honestly felt like a weight was lifted off my shoulders as we charged up to ~80% in under an hour.

The next day we tried Maui Brew co., hearing good things about their chargers. I shouldn’t have been surprised that all 4 were broken, with 2 of them apparently down for multiple years.
The short of it is the anxiety and inconvenience was absolutely not worth it. I had heard maui has committed to EV support in the last few years but boy is it still struggling."

I've seen EV chargers in the WKORV parking lot, near the tennis courts. I've never used them, so I don't know if they are reliable.

I did read that thanks. In fact I probably would have the EV rented if it weren’t for your article.

Just wondering if anybody on TUG has actually done it as unfortunately it feels like a lot of articles and reviews on EVs get posted by people who already knew they were going to hate them prior to trying. Sounds like too much of a hassle/risk to take on for vacation time though… too bad the infrastructure isn’t quite there on Maui.

$1348 ($80/day) for Kauai 17 days in November with Costco (Budget). Ouch

Likely to go Turo. Worked great for us last year.

Wife is talking about renting for half the time, just staying close to the resort after we get groceries and all that done. Never done Kauai w/o a car yet. Could take some taxis for that price.

Don't rent Turo. With additional insurance may be more than the rental agencies. Also, what happens if you have car problems. And a big one, many of the drop off/pick up locations are illegal spots. But do what you want, I'm just quoting stuff I've read on the Maui TA forum and much of it from folks who live there.

You may also want to check about renting off-airport. PHX airport has really high car rental rates due to surcharges.

Several years ago we were planning a one-way driving trip from Phoenix to Denver, with flights into and out of the airports on either end. We discovered by flipping the trip around, and flying into Denver and ending in Phoenix, the car rental rates were cut by more than half. Since it was a meandering driving trip, the direction we went didn't matter. It worked out just fine.

Dave
That worked out for us last year. We rented in Palm Springs and returned in Phoenix. This year, we tried pickup and drop off locations and different dates and times every way till Sunday and nothing produced a decent rate for us. So PHX to PHX it is...

Has anyone heard of or used NU car rental on Maui? I just got an offer from Autoslash for a lowere rate from them but Autoslash gave the a 1 1/2 star rating.

I saw a comment about them somewhere. I'll see if I can find it. I don't think it was positive.

I found it. It was on the Maui TripAdvisor forum.

They're buried in the "Other" rental agency lists at Autoslash. Obviously not a major contender. I'd avoid them.

Autoslash? I had never heard of them . . . but it's been YEARS since I've been shopping for a rental car.

I'm looking at our Hawaii trip in December . . . looks like for Kauai we could save around $150 vs. the already booked car with AARP Travel. But it's a prepaid reservation. I see they offer a refund if cancelled 48 hours in advance of the rental date. Has anyone done this with this company and how reliable are they with the refund policy?

Autoslash keeps offering me rentals in Orlando at NU. I have Advantage already, and we used them before and it was just okay. Fox was also okay. NU is too new for me. Get it??? Haha!

For Maui, I used autorentals.com for our February trip and came up with SixT again, which was incredible this year. I just think $2,100 is a lot for a car rental, even if it's six weeks. I keep watching for prices to drop a bit on Costco, and I did put our rental rate on Autoslash and hope to get something.

Check your rental car rates. :)
Weekly rates have dropped significantly since the last time I checked. I was able to book a compact car for April 2024 for $383.
Mine is $386 for a week on the Big Island in mid February. Need to check on Oahu again, as those rates were much higher.
