The pricing of mid size car between Costco and Hawaii discount website ~$10. I have never rented a car thru Discount Hawaii car rental .

If I go with Discount car rental, I will pick up a car at Thifty . If I go with Costco , I will get a car at Alamo.

Between these two companies ( Alamo and Thifty) , which one will give me a better car in good condition in Honolulu airport. If anyone has rented a car thru any company, can you please share your inputs.

By the way, should I reserve a mid size SUV. It cost ~ $10 more if rent it thru Costco. I am not sure how easy to park at mid size SUV in Waikiki beach parking garage.

Please advise and Thank you

If it makes you feel better Thrifty is part of the Hertz family.

We usually rent through whoever has the better price. And then after the reservation is made I register it with AutoSlash since they will monitor and I'll get an email if they find a cheaper price.

Can't help with the ease of parking an SUV on Oahu.

I've rented from both companies and had zero issues with either company's inventory. The cars were fine. If you're signed up with Alamo and Thrifty's loyalty programs and have your number registered in the reservation, you can save a lot of time at the rental counter. Plan ahead and save yourself a lot of time.

If you don't NEED an SUV, (and on Oahu you won't), I'd suggest going with a normal car. The SUV doesn't have a trunk, so anything left in the car can be seen from outside, and may be a target for a break in. Some driving lanes will be narrower, and might be a hassle to drive. Parking a larger vehicle can be tighter there, as parking places tend to be narrower than you might expect. I've rented all sorts of vehicles in Hawaii, and have never had a car I didn't like.

Thank you Luanne and Dave for quick reply . You both has a good point about car rental.

I plan to park a rental car at Waikiki Banyan garage, but not sure if the parking space at this garage is widen enough to park a mid size SUV car . DH prefer the mid size SUV because he drives one at home and it is easy for him to get in / get out of the car.

He will take his handicap placard on this trip. Does anyone know if it will help with handicap parking space around Oahu island.

I don't think that there is a lot of difference in size between a mid-sized SUV (probably like an Equinox or Escape) and a mid-sized car in width or length. Most mid-sized SUV have fairly dark tinted windows in the back. If you are concerned about someone spotting something in the back and breaking in, then don't carry valuables back there, avoid parking your car in unpopulated areas (like turn-out) and leaving unattended or throw something over them (perhaps bring some black plastic garbage bags with you.

I missed the "mid sized" part of the SUV comment. I agree with BJR that there probably isn't much difference in size over an Intermediate car. I also agree with covering things up, or not leaving it in the car. My larger point was that if you didn't need the four wheel drive features of an SUV, it may be easier to not have one. If you're going to use handicap spaces, I wouldn't worry about any of the above. Many handicapped spaces tend to be oversized to allow for access into and out of the car. Go with what you like, and enjoy your vacation.

If I could only pay $10 more to rent from Alamo, I would 100% book with Alamo. You get to pick your car from the isle, not end up with whatever they assign you. Also with Costco, you get a free additional driver. Book with Alamo through Costco.

Thank you ALL for additional information about car rental. I am all set to go now. Book a midsize SUV with Alamo thru Costco. Will see what kind of car we will get at Honolulu airport

By the way, I need advice about booking UBER drive . I have never used UBER drive before. I just have UBER install on my phone not long ago and will learn how to book an Uber taxi on this trip if I can.

I need to be at airport around 5:00am for 7:00am flight tomorrow, not sure if I can order a Uber around 4:00am - 4:30am. Should I order a taxi now to have it ready at doorstep at 4:30am or I can order an uber tomorrow at 4:30am . Does Uber operate 24 hrs/ day or just a certain time.

Does anyone know how long it normally takes (from the time to place an order) to have the Uber driver show up at the pick up at my place . Right now , I can see a lot of car running around my home, but not sure if any Uber at 4:00am - 4:30am tomorrow.

I was told I can place an order a head of time, but I do not know how to do it yet.
