Hello everyone, me and my family are staying at the Royal Islander, Royal Mayan and Club International the week of June 28 through July 5 2008. My family have always stayed at AI resorts in Cancun, and would like to get an idea of the cost of food at the resorts. We plan to go to Walmart and buy food to cook, but we don't want to do alot of that since we are on vacation. :D
We want to make sure that we plan FINANCIALLY and not be surprised when we get there. Can you tell me what the cost is for the breakfast buffet? Also what is the cost for the theme night dinners and are they buffet style? What are the times of Happy Hour and what is the approximately cost of mixed drinks and shots of Tequila :whoopie:

2 Weeks and 2 Days to go

We'll be in Cancun the same week

I can't help too much in way of prices since it's been over a year since we were there, but overall the prices aren't bad. I do remember that the breakfast buffet at the Royal Sands was pretty reasonable, but thought for dinner ordering off the menu was better. I also recommend Hacienda Sisal. We enjoyed it so much that we ate there twice last year:whoopie:

I'll look through all the stuff i still have from last year and see if I find the room bill (if I haven't thrown it away). then I can give you a better idea on prices.

See you in Cancun
Mike

I thought the prices in the in-house tiendas had gone up since last year.
That being said, if you are willing to buy the local, Mexican brands, you will save a lot.
Think NOT buying Ritz crackers, Oreos, etc. but rather the Mexican brands.

Prices aren't bad and you don't need to spend too much.

The brunch buffet is around $10 I believe - maybe it's up to $10.99. Go during the last hour and roll out and you won't need lunch. The Sands (but not the others) has a nice lunch buffet, though I don't know the price.
Theme night dinners are in the mid $20's to low $30's, and are buffet. The poolside BBQs are not buffet, and I don't remember the prices.

About the most expensive thing on the menu at the Royal Islander is a steak for $23. There is usually some kind of dinner special (e.g. fish or chicken with soup or salad) for about $15.

If everyone gets cocktails and dessert, the bill goes way up of course, but for the basic main dishes, the prices are good. The least expensive options are the Palapa restaurant at the Mayan and Pacos Tacos at the Islander.

Definitely take advantage of the "express" take-out at the Sands and Caribbean; BBQ ribs are about $12, a rotisserie chicken about $7, large caesar salad about $4 . A large pizza is around $12. You can get a chicken and salad, make some rice or mashed potatoes from the store, and you've got dinner for 4.

You can get just about everything you need at the mini-markets at the Royals; Walmart is interesting and the bakery is very good, but unless you want to get meats and chicken, you can get by with the stores on-site.

One additional thing about the Theme Night Dinners, drinks are included in the price.

Hora feliz (happy hour) at the Royal Mayan is from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the pool and palapa bars. It's dos por uno during hora feliz!:cheer:

I almost forgot, there's a Duty Free store at the Cancun airport just past the customs counters where you show your passport. Liquor prices are cheap!:D

Have a great time and leave some tequila for me!:)

My family will also be there June 28th to July 5th, The past few years I have brought about $700 for the week and that cover me, my wife and our 5 and 3 year olds. we eat the breakfast buffet about 3x at the Carribbean, Lunch by the pool each day with 2 for 1 drinks at about 2pm and we also eat dinner out about 4x. we shop at WalMart the 1st day for cerials cookies milk water PBJ and some other stuff. Hope to see you by the kids pool at the Islander..

Our bill for the week at the Royal Sands was $1200US for 6 adults so $200US per person which we thought was great value. Most days we ate breakfast in our room and only had two lunches off the property. Happy hour was from 3-5pm and this was the only time we drank.

Breakfast buffet when I was there 2 weeks ago was $12.99 pp. Drinks, of course, are lower price during happy hour. Large Margarita was $10, $5 during happy hour. Lunch ran approx. $15 pp. Did not attend a dinner theme night, but they were listed at $20-$25 pp. Hope that helps!

It is also nice after waiting in the Immigration line for an hour or more. It must be cheap since I saw several Airline employees making purchases and they should know.;)

Cheers

I love the breakfast buffet at the Rooyal Mayan even though it is the same food and we stay at the Islander. I just like the atmosphere better (open air). Make sure you have a piece of the banana bread! It's the best!:whoopie:

Our favorite restaurant is also the Palapa at the Mayan. Open air, casual, and lots of good and reasonably priced lunch and dinner choices.

You can get loaves of the banana bread from the Express take-out by the Caribbean's Tradewinds restaurant - yummmmm!

Just a few more days.....can't wait!!!

VCI food

In your post you indicate you are staying at 3 resorts so I assume you have a group of at least 10 people. I have been going to VCI for many years -- my parents bought there in 1978. My wife (Rhonda) and I have a family consisting of her teen-age son, her two daughters and my three daughters -- the five girls range from 25 to 30 -- plus two son-in-laws, three long-term boyfriends, and two grandchildren. Our experiences with our group may help you figure out your likely eating expenses.

In 2007, our group consisted of me and Rhonda, four of our girls, two of their boyfriends, and two 16 year old boys. We had three villas. At check-out our bills for that week were $900 for villa # 1, $570 for villa # 2 and $302 for villa # 3 -- a total of $1,772 for 10 people. But, there are more details that might be helpful for your planning.

We usually stock up on groceries at Chedraui as soon as possible after we check-in so we have snacks, drinks, breakfast food, and stuff for sandiwiches or similar items. With a group like ours, we have people going all different directions at times and but we have 2 planned group evening meals that we cook in the villas -- partly for economy and partly for fun because we're Cajuns and we enjoy cooking and eating together.

Even though we stock a pretty good larder of groceries and beverages, we always end up charging a fair amount of food on our room cards. After all, it's so easy to order drinks or snacks from the nice waiter when you're sitting in your lounge chair and don't want to walk back to your villa -- even though our old (pre-renewal) villa was in Building 8 on pool level and close to the beach.

Plus there are times when no one feels like fixing a meal. Plus, when the 20-somethings head down to the Sands or the Tri-Royals for a change of scenery, there are plenty of beverages to be bought and snacks to be eaten. Plus, there are the barbecued hamburgers at the Welcome Party. Plus, there are days when whatever is being cooked at the Palapa smells too good to resist. Plus, there are always things we end up buying at the Tienda because it's just too easy and convenient.

Most of our $1,772 of charges in 2007 were for the Palapa, the Tienda and the Pool Bars at VCI and the Royal Sands. Hoewver, there were other items charged on the room cards. Some of the girls hit the Royal Sands Spa and some of the guys hit the gym. We also had six airport transfers via Thomas More and a few other miscellaneous charges.

Most of the meals that we charged in 2007 were at the VCI Palapa but, in my experience, the prices at all the Royals are pretty similar. In 2007, four of our group ate one meal at Captain's Cove but no one ate at El Conquistador or Hacienda Sisal so we didn't have any really expensive meals on our VCI account.

We did spend some money eating at places besides VCI. In addition to the food we charged at VCI and the meals we cooked in our villas, our entire group went out to eat twice -- at La Fisheria one evening and at Casa Rolandi on Isla Mujeres another evening. We also had a partial group meal at Lorenzillo's one night and partial group lunches at Playa Lanchero on Isla Mujeres and at Maroma Paradise Marina. Basically, we spent about $1,300 for food and drinks at VCI and other Royals and about $500 for groceries at Chedraui -- including cerveza, wine, liquor and coffee and stuff to bring home as gifts. I don't have the figures on what we spent at the other restaurants but Playa Lanchero was tres cheap and Casa Rolandi was tres cher. Hope this helps you figure out your food budget.

There have been some posts about who will be where during weeks 25 and 26so, I want y'all to know that Rhonad and I will be in Cancun those weeks. We will be at VCI from 6/21 through 7/4 and would enjoy meeting some of the other TUG members. We will have our Houston stepdaughter and boyfriend (both 28 ) and stepson and girlfriend (both 17) in our new beach level C type villa on the east side of the Palapa. After 30 years in villa B-814 I decided it was time for a change of scenery. The children return to Louisiana and Texas on 6/27 and on 6/28 we switch to a B villa that we bought so we would have a place to rest after the children leave.

Unfortunately, our Jackson MS daughter, our Baton Rouge daughter, our Pearland TX daughter, and our New York City daughter all had to change plans this year so we will have a smaller group than usual. That means I don't have built-in tennis partners or built-in groups for fishing, taking off down Highway 307 to Boca Pailla, or going to Isla Mujeres. If any of you TUG posters engage in those activities, let's get in touch.
John
