Converting week to Marriott Points vs converting to II

We sometimes want to go to a timeshare not in the Marriott family. My options are to reserve my Marriott week and then give it to II in exchange, hopefully, for the week I want. The other option would be to convert my Marriott week to Destination Points and then use those with II to get the week I want.
Curious: which of these options makes more sense.
Thanks,
Jeff

It can vary a lot according to where and when you are wanting to go.
In general, not always, using Club points in II is terrible value.
You won't be able to exchange Club points for any MVC, Sheraton or Westin resorts.
The good news is that you can go and manually search by Club points and your week to get a view on what might be best for you.
Don't forget to check II getaways and accom cets to ensure that you are getting the best deal. E.g try to avoid using your week as an exchange for somewhere that you can get a getaway for less than your maintenance fee.

Thanks for your reply. I guess the reason for my question is that we often need to decide if we are converting to Club points or leaving our Marriott week as is before we have decided what our plans are. But we do enjoy going to some of the Mexico resorts that are not a Marriott product. If I do the Club point conversion, I have the flexibility of going with II or staying within the Marriott system. But if I miss the conversion date in September, my choices are limited to II if not staying at my own Marriott resort. So with that reasoning, converting to Marriott Club points makes the most sense.
My question really dealt with which version will net me the best trade in II, a Marriott week conversion to II or the equivilant Marriott Club points. As you suggested, if I know where we want to go, I can just check the specific II resort and compare for myself. And if unsure, stick with the Marriott Club points for the flexibility.
So a question that didn't need to be asked.
As Gilda Radner would have said: "Never Mind"

BTW, Hidsite, I have attached a painting I have hanging in my bathroom titled "Hindsight"
Enjoy.

Thanks for the picture.

My view is that using a week is just under double the value of using club points in II. If I used club points to get the same weeks I get on exchange in II when I deposit my week for, I'd have to elect 2 weeks, and then have a few hundred points left over. The only exception I've found is a studio in Madeira over NYE for 1,000 club points, which seems stunningly good value for that time of year and location. Other than that only my plat 2-bed elects for enough club points to get a peak studio in II, see table below. All of my weeks perform much better, reliably trading up a season and often 2 seasons.

If its Mexico you are interested in then do a bit of looking at what is available via II getaways. It can be the case that is is much, much cheaper to use a getaway than use your MVC ownership for some locations, and Mexico is one of them.

If there is a blue + sign next to a resort name then that indicates it is mandatory all inclusive so select the Exchange or Book it button and go a couple of pages in to the fees page and see how much it costs, it can be a lot. Even if a resort doesn't have a blue + there may be resort fee so the same advice applies. As long as you don't put in payment info or pass the confirm transaction page, you can back out without commitment.
You cans et getaway alerts on the II App so you can get a notification is inventory is available, that way you can get a feel for what does come up.

Enjoy exploring.

I'd suggest you decide what type of vacation you're wanting before deciding. For exchanges, you'll be far better off depositing a week rather than using points. But you may have other options that are even better. II getaways, renting privately, bonus weeks are potential options. You mentioned MX which is generally an easy exchange. It also may depend on what you'd be depositing. If you have a lock off option, locking off will be your best bet for many locations but not all. Just another reason to decide ahead what your goal is. You can also do request first with II and can search online without actually depositing.

If you have a mid value week ( worth 2500-4000 pts) Then depositing the week can make sense. BUT if you have a week that is worth more than 4000 points IMHO getting the points is likely the better deal.
