Went to a presentation and purchased 2,000 points for a total of $21,000 this came with a bonus of 4,000 points to be used in three years. I am thinking of rescinding and buying resale. Thoughts? Are there any negatives to purchasing resale? We also own two weeks that are not eligible to be enrolled. The idea with a small amount of points is to add on some flexibility and extend vacations or take smaller vacations throughout the year. All input welcome! Thanks.

Resale points after junk fee are same as regular points. Cost is $5-$6/point after junk fee ($2-3/point +$3 junk fee)
And you can buy as few as 1000

Rescind because as stated you could possibly save $9000 or more buying resale. There is no difference in the points.

There are no negatives to the points themselves. They function exactly the same as those bought directly from MVC. There may be some negatives to the purchase process itself. I have bought resale and wouldn't do it any other way. You need to make sure you are getting them from a reliable seller. MVC has right of first refusal (ROFR). Which means if they don't like the sale they can stop it. My understanding is that this is typically if the price is too low. The seller should let you know what usage year you would first have the ability to use the points. If it is the current year they may ask that you also pay the maintenance fee at a prorated amount. When I bought mine I was given the option. Some sellers may expect that you do that as part of the sale.

I think you already know that buying resale is the way to go if you want to save your hard earned money.

My only advice is to purchase resale points that run on a calendar year that expire December 31st each year. I find calendar year points are far easier to manage.

Enjoy your resale points!

Do I need to have some points purchased directly from Marriott to do resale or can my account be just resale points?

Resale points are identical to points purchased from Marriott -- after you pay the junk fees. So your account may contain only resale points.
