We're flying to Cancun in June. The best airline prices right now include a stop in Mexico City on our return flight. It would be: Cancun-Mexico City-Dallas-Denver.

Has anyone connected through Mexico City recently? Would we need to collect our luggage in Mexico City or is it checked through to Dallas where we'd need to go collect it to through customs, then check it again for the flight to Denver?

Thanks!

You will have to collect your luggage to clear customs in Dallas and then re-check it to your final destination. Not sure how long your lay over is in Mexico City, but if you plan to wander around the airport, make sure to have your passport and airline ticket/boarding pass on your person at all times. Due to lack of signage I went off to find something to eat and accidentally left the secured area, and I was stopped by a uniformed guy with an AK47 when I tried to go back up the escalator to where my husband was. Some fast thinking on my feet and enough Spanish under my belt, and I was back on my way. But just make sure to never leave your spouse holding your documents when you decide to take a stroll!

I suggest you check with your carrier. In January of 2008, we got Delta Skymiles tickets on Mexicana code share flight from JFK to Puerto Vallarta (PVR) with a change of plane in Mexico City. Mexicana checked our luggage was check thru to PVR at JFK, which was a good thing, since there was only 1hr between the connections, and we landed a little late. We did not need to pick up our bags or clear customs until we got to PVR. I recall an immigration check when we moved thru the terminal to our connecting gate, but that took no time at all.
