Congestion pricing in NYC starts June 30th

Several times a year we make the drive(from upstate NY) to visit our son in Brooklyn. The least expensive toll was taking one of the tunnels into lower manhattan and then crossing into brooklyn. It could be traffic nightmare at times. This would in effect make that toll equal to the other routes i could take and possible reduce the traffic for me! When you live where tolls are not a thing, visiting places like that are annoying.

Oh thank goodness - we are heading back up in July.

It's election year and this plan appears to be very very unpopular.

Huge mistake to ditch this plan. If New Yorkers are struggling wouldn't you expect them to drive less? Driving a personal car is very expensive. It is the most expensive way to get around. We dumped one of our cars 20 years ago to save money. I'm too cheap and want to avoid the neighborhood parking fees, tolls, $175 oil changes, car tabs, high gas taxes etc.

IDK about the parking fees or whatever a car tab is, but how are you paying $175 for an oil change? Is this Manhattan pricing?

Seattle pricing is higher than NYC pricing. Most of the service shops in the city have closed as they are sitting on property that is worth $40m an acre. Making 50 cents a gallon on gas and a few hundred dollars on each service call really doesn't pencil out for them. They can make far more selling their properties to a developer for tens of millions of dollars. When labor + taxes + benefits on each worker > $100 an hour I don't think they are really making that much charging $175 for oil changes. I refuse to pay so much and dumped our other car 20 years ago.

I get 10 quarts of Kirkland 0w-20 synthetic on sale for $30.

Easy to change on a Subaru. Drop off used oil at Autozone!

Wow, and people bash CA prices. I pay $79 for synthetic blend oil change while you wait, a free soda, and a free car wash coupon.

It's not all NY, I paid $76 after bullshit 3% card fee, and thought it was pretty high. I'm pretty sure I can get it for sub $50 with full synthetic 0w20 at a different shop.

In case you have not heard. NY Governor has reinstated this money 💰 grab. However she has a new introductory discount sign up price of just $9 vs $15.
Due to start on Jan 5th 2025!

Huge mistake to pause this. The sooner they get this started the better. William F Buckley proposed congestion tolling when he ran for mayor back in the 1960s. Too bad it has taken 60 years to implement. Can't wait until Seattle does the same thing.

Disagree completely-
As someone who commuted to NYC this is disgraceful- especially if the changes do not exempt taxis and ride share fares.

I don’t need congestion pricing to never want to go into NYC again. Happy to stay away.

Why would the charges exempt certain vehicles? Tolling would a huge benefit to commercial vehicles as they would waste less time in traffic.

$9 is a joke though. The charge should be variable and not have an upper cap.

Well not like you would ever drive into Manhattan. That is just crazy. Aren't the parking fees over $100 per day? In Seattle the hotels are charging $75 a night. I'm sure Manhattan is even higher.

The majority of mass transit with NYC is inaccessible… that leaves taxis and ride shares as the only option. This disproportionately effects that portion of the community that the original intent was supposed to remedy…
Not sure sure how up on this you are but congestion funding was supposed to make mass transit in NYC accessible by 2055… that’s a long time away to be charging extra for those with little to no other options.

Love NYC. I've been 3 times this year and will be there at least 3 times next year. On my first visit I was overwhelmed and it look awhile for me to want to go back. Now I look forward to our yearly visit.

How much will it reduce congestion?

I grew up going there A LOT! My parents grew up in the Bronx ( I was born there), and most of my family was from there. My husband is from Manhattan and Brooklyn, as was his family. Always down there during holidays to see the tree and Rockettes and a broadway play or museum, events, parties, concerts, etc.

I was just never a city girl I guess. It’s too much overload for me, but I did have fun there in my younger years.

I have never lived in a big city, but always on the outskirts. Right now we are almost in a rural area. I need my city fix, so going to San Francisco and NYC once a year each takes care of that.

Yes that is a problem. They should be working to make the system accessible to all.

Charging 9$? I think they will find that will make very little if any dent in congestion levels. The problem on Seattle freeways is when they capped the tolls at $10 for the express toll lanes, drivers just shrugged and clogged the toll lanes making them just as slow as the regular lanes. They upped the cap to $15 but it needs to be upcapped.
