Very interesting. It isn't clear who the audience was and what steps were taken since then, but it certainly appears that it wasn't enough to be prepared for this outbreak. Hopefully the current efforts will help us overcome the virus sooner rather than later.

Thanks for sharing this video. It was eye opening. Bill Gates is a genius. He knows so much about viruses. He seems to dig into the areas that he funds. Maybe he should fund some research on global pandemics.

I remember when this was done. In addition, there have been numerous advocates for preparing for epidemics. And, of course there have been fictional stories for decades on this topic, some good and some bad.

With all these warnings we did very little. Worse, in the last few years we actually went backwards with the elimination of personnel who would recognize the early signs and advocate for a response.

With hope our society will recognize these failures so that we are prepared for the next one. Don’t think this will be the last one. Whether it is in ten years or 100, there will be another. Shouldn’t we be better prepared?

Bill Gates does know a lot about infectious diseases. He digs deep into the topics he funds. Just because he does not have a medical degree does not mean he doesn’t Know a lot. He has access to the world’s top experts. I admire the work he does through his foundation and that he is not just writing checks,

Now I will agree with the fact he is using (applying) his money toward worthwhile causes these days. Probably trying to make up for the evils of Microsoft for all those years.....

But to extend the point further, it should not be Bill making the point, it should be the experts in the field. If Bill were to give these experts a platform from which to speak (and the world take notice) that would be his best role to play.

Maybe it’s not so black and white. Some people will listen to Bill but the medical doctors will not get their attention. I think it is great that Bill is using his platform and notoriety to speak out and educate others. He has a large following of people who like him. Epidemiologists do not. He does allow the experts to speak too, though. It is not either/or. It is like Oprah speaking about coronavirus on her new special (although I would argue Bill Gates is more of an expert than Oprah LOL). Oprah has a huge platform and she can get the attention of people who otherwise might not pay attention.

He speaks to the research that he has available to him and through the organizations he and his foundation has access to. Whether you like it or not, Bill Gates getting up on a public stage and talking about this research has much more impact than having an expert in the field saying the same thing. There are your comments (to date) in this thread.

Your first comment was toward some (very) little known psychic - who also has the same amount of training that Bill has in this area. That is why I replied as I did. The tendency of people with money and an agenda (be that agenda good, bad or somewhere in between) to find ways to air their views and concerns does not make those concerns any more or less legitimate. The more pressing issue is efforts by people such as Bill Gates and Elon Musk will draw more attention to them and attention away from the people we should be listening to - the actual experts.

The fact that we (as a society) pay attention to people like Gates and Musk instead of the actual experts in the fields they (Gates and Musk) want to dabble in speaks poorly of us as a society and explains (at least in part) why advancement in so many areas has fallen off in the recent years. If Gates (and Musk) are truly altruistic in their motivations, yield the stage to the experts - those who have studied, trained and worked in the field. Those are the people we need to be listening to.

As to your ad hominem ramblings - I'll pass.

I should have noted this as well in my earlier post - a recent event that brought this back to light for me was watching a recent press conference. The politician(s) doing the press conference were spouting off about medical issues and topics they have no experience in (with). Medical experts were available - why were they not at the podium?

We have a CDC and it appears many politicians seem to think they know more about medical issues than the CDC.
I have the electorate remembers these people come the next election.
