When I turn on my old computer the green and red lights in the front come on, but no picture comes on the monitor. I unplugged everything from the CPU and let it sit for several hours. I changed the power cord and re-attached the monitor then turned it back on with the same results. I unplugged everything again and attached it to another monitor with no success so I don't think it's the monitor. The DVD drives will not open, either.

I hate to get rid of it because I have Windows XP running on it and several of my software goodies will not run on Vista. Also, I put Word 2007 and Norton on this CPU and it is the third computer for those licensing agreements.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

Joyce

Power supply at fault?

Most likely dead (or only partially functioning) power supply. If its a standard type they are easily replaceable for around $50. Have it tested to be sure thats it first. Sticking with XP and what you own if you can fix it cheaply is a great plan.

I had it diagnosed at the Geek squad. It turns out it was a dead motherboard. Surprisingly they did not charge me to test it!! Thanks for your help.

If you replace the motherboard you will have to reinstall XP.

You're now at an important decision. Rather than replace the motherboard with a similar unit I would suggest you upgrade to a new better quality board. Unfortunately, if you do this, you might very well have to replace the processor and the memory modules. Then, depending on the output of your power supply, it too might need to be replaced. Then all you have left is the CD/DVD ROM and hard drive(s). It will be smarter to just buy a new computer.

Then you can pull the hard drive out of the old machine and install it into the new machine.

Think thru all your options as there is no easy answer.

Thanks. I told the guy at Geek Squad about the licensing concerns for Norton and Word 2007 as well as not being able to run some software on Windows 7. He said that Norton and Word 2007 can be "removed" from one computer and reinstalled on another. He also said that there is a way to configure Windows 7 to run software that will run on XP. Do you agree?

If what he said is correct, my feeling would be to just get a new computer.

I would just go to a local computer shop and have them build me a new computer with windows xp as the os. They could even re-install your old HD or make a mirrored copy of it to your new HD which is pro ably the route I would go. It might cost more then buying a computer from best buy, but the service will be better and you won't have to deal with the probable windows 7 issues.

That sounds like the easiest solution. I'm on my way to the local computer shop to do just that. Thank you, everyone. I know I can always rely on you tuggers for help!

It's very easy for Windows 7 to run "XP software" so don't even worry about that. Word 2007 will work perfectly on W7. More importantly, the best thing you could do right now is to get a computer with Windows 7. It's far better than XP. Then too, getting rid of Norton would be even better!

It's far better than XP.

That's what they said with vista also. I've read some reviews on w7 and some people are saying it's basically just vista sp2.

2 years ago I bought the newest latest and greatest pc with vista to replace the pc I had with xp. What a terrible os! It was slow, unstable and just frustrating to use. My father then got a new latest and greatest pc about 6 months after me and vista nearly killed him due to the frustration. 2 months after he got it he gave it away to some kid in his neighborhood and bought another new pc with xp pro as the os and he's been very happy with it.

Vista was the last straw with me and it reminded me so much of the issues I had with windows millenium edidtion. I went ahead and bought an iMac and installed xp pro using vmware fusion to have a place for all my windows programs and files.

It is far too early to say Windows 7 is the new, fairly reliable XP or yet another Vista/ME in waiting. SO far early reports look like a better XP BUT, for now, you are far safer to simply keep XP or get a new PC with XP until at least the first year and first service pack comes out and there is a history with 7. I have already seen one issue with the Winsock (broken since Windows 2000, still not fixed apparently) but unlike every WIndows through Vista MS has TURNED OFF the ability of a third party utility to fix it! So, guess what, relaod is the only choice! So right there is reason enough not to load it yet.

On the other hand if you are saddled with the Vista disaster then you should upgrade to 7 ASAP. You simply cannot be any worse off in 7 than you are in Vista. They set a new bar for bad software when Vista was foisted on the world. And the bar, Windows ME, was already incredibly low.

After all is said and done, I have decided to go to my lake house and bring back my old computer which is the second one that Word 2007 and Norton have been installed on. I will by a new one this summer for the lake house. My understanding is that the upgrade to windows 7 has an XP format and all my programs will work on it. I was very satisfied with XP and Vista and hope that Windows 7 will be a good OS. Thanks, Tuggers.

When I installed W7 I set up a dual boot with XP as the alternate. I was concerned about bugs in a new OS and also that many XP programs would not run on W7. In the meantime I'm running XP on my server and also on my laptop.

I've only used the dual boot to XP 2-3 times and am ready to wipe out XP as the dual boot option. W7 is very nice and considerably superior to XP. It's almost a pain to use XP on my laptop, so it won't be long before I swap out XP for W7 on that one.

Every one I know who has migrated from Vista to W7 really hates Vista and loves W7.
