Has anyone had an issue with requesting a joint account? Since our first purchase I have financially contributed to payments and purchases. I had a separate BonVoy aka rewards. When the merge took place my spouse was listed as primary. Since then, on certain occasions, I have had to prove I am ”entitled”. I checked on this today via chat and was informed I could add to reservations as a guest.
This is unacceptable.
It may not appear to be a big deal, but it is insulting to the partner who also bought with Marriott. Equal partnership should be the standard.

I am a little unclear on what's specifically happening here. Are you both on the deeds?

If you are both MVC owners on all involved accounts and you are referring to Bonvoy stays, only ONE Bonvoy number will be reflected with MVC and thus get status with Bonvoy stays. If you are not listed on the deeds, you are not entitled other than as a guest, the ownership can be changed but there are fees. If you are both listed but are reserving under your spouses account, it will go under that name but can be changed.

This became a problem recently after Marriott encouraged merging accounts.

Was this a issue using owned MVC options, exchanges or hotel points? Are you on ALL deeds, it sounds like you may be on part but not all? Otherwise you are not providing enough information that we can be certain what's going on.

Not sure what you mean about merging accounts. For our MVC web profiles, my wife and I each have our own logins. If I want a reservation in my name I can make that reservation through my login, the same for her. This doesn't change the associated Bonvoy number. We deposit all of our weeks into II, so it really doesn't matter all that much for us. But we also have separate II web profiles for the same reason.

I will add that when we checkin we never have an issue if a reservation is in my wife's name and I am the one at the front desk checking in. My wife often waits in the car. I just take both our IDs (drivers license) in with me and explain my wife is in the car. Only once, at DSV, did they go out to the car to check that my wife was real.

It appears I jumped in too quickly to inquire regarding my dilemma.
We initially purchased in 1990. The property was deeded. In the following years we have added points as weeks owners. I will need to check the deed docs on the weeks to see how they were titled.

The issue I seem to experience in the last two transactions are where i have converted MVC Points to BonVoy points. My spouse had to be contacted to verify reservations. Both reservations were international. I regret if I represented my issue with MVC properties. I have not had the same issues in the previous year.

I will close my post until I gather more information about titles on documents.

Regards for responses.

No worries, we're just trying to understand what's happening and I think we have a better picture now. Since this is for reservations through the Bonvoy System and I assume, using Bonvoy points, there is no combined account. Bonvoy does not do joint accounts through some hotel brands do. Thus only the person listed on the account can actually make a reservation and can only make it in their name. It is possible to change the name but you will likely have to call Bonvoy prior to do so or go through a process at the hotel. You can transfer points to your Bonvoy account once a year with a limit of the number transferred. In some cases you can change the name directly on the Bonvoy account afterwards but I haven't had any luck doing so for points reservations. In addition, you would not be entitled to the perks associated with your spouse's status if they are no present. The names on the MVC deeds will be irrelevant in this situation. Only one owner's Bonvoy number can be associated with the MVC account but you can change it though they only do so once a year usually around late Jan to early Feb.

The issue is that as a co-owner, you actually have your own account to use to login with MVC. If you do not know your owner number or your specific owner login information, request help to create your own individual account and then make your reservations from your account and your name will be on the reservation (and not your co-owner's name).

When there are joint owners, only one is designated as "primary". The primary person is the one who receives the BonVoy perks tied to their BonVoy account. The primary person can be switched once per year, and then it will be effective for that year. The change deadline is in January for every year.

Regarding reservations for timeshare ownership, because each owner receives their own individual login, if the reservations are being shown under your co-owner's name, then that is because that is the owner account being used to make the reservations (if you are doing it online after logging in). If you are calling, make sure to request the customer service rep place both of your names on the reservation. The default is the primary account name when you call or if done online, as noted, the reservation will be the name from whosever account was used to login to make it.

It really is only an issue when co-owners travel separately. If you are traveling together, then just make sure to remember whose account you are using for the reservation, and get assistance at the time to add the other's name. If you decide later that the person will be joining you, the guest form is easy to do. It is an email link from the reservation page.

If you turned MVC Trust points into BonVoy points, and your spouse had to be contacted, that is because you did it by using your spouse's account and the BonVoy number tied to that login is where the BonVoy points ended up. You have your own profile, and you have your own BonVoy number. Since BonVoy is individual only, you have no ownership right to the BonVoy points in your spouse's BonVoy account. That is why the spouse needed to give permission. Make sure to use your own individual login and verify your BonVoy number is in your owner profile.

If you use your spouse's BonVoy account to make reservations for yourself, where your spouse will not be present, then technically that violates the BonVoy T&C. Each BonVoy account can gift points to another account, or if the account owner will not be in a point based reservation, that reservation can only be made by calling BonVoy customer service. There are only 5x/yr point based gifts of reservations booked can be made. When that happens, no ENC or status is given to the recipient. If you are staying on your own, then make sure to make the reservation from your own BonVoy account. You will receive ENC and whatever status you hold individually. If your spouse has higher BonVoy status due to ownership of the timeshare, then consider shifting the primary to you for status, especially if your spouse isn't traveling much.

It actually isn't an issue using a MVC week reserved under the other parties account as the properties can look up the owners and confirm. The issue here appears to be the OP believes that a joint MVC account equates to a joint Bonvoy account and we know that isn't the case the the OP apparently did not, until now. Personally I believe a Bonvoy account should be a joint account but it's not my decision.

It sounds like the OP used the spouse's account to exchange owned MVC Trust Points for BonVoy points and those points then went to that co-owner's BonVoy account. The co-owner OP should have used their individual MVC owner login to exchange the co-owned MVC Trust Points for BonVoy points, and then those BonVoy points would go to that co-owner's individual BonVoy account.

Of course the BonVoy accounts are not joint. They are rewards accounts. Just like mileage accounts. Everyone has their own.

The co-owner OP should have used their individual MVC owner login to exchange the co-owned MVC Trust Points for BonVoy points, and then those BonVoy points would go to that co-owner's individual Bonoy account.

But since only one Bonvoy Account can be tied to the MVC account, would this have mattered? The issue was that they reserved under the Spouse's Bonvoy account. They could have transferred up to 100,000 points yearly to their own account.

You are not understanding -- while only one co-owner's BonVoy account will receive the owner status from timeshare ownership, each owner still has their own individual login to MVC. Each individual owner has their own BonVoy account in their profile (unless that owner simply failed to ever get a BonVoy account for whatever reason). The BonVoy points received when ownership is exchanged for points -- the 40 BonVoy per 1 MVC Trust point -- will go to the BonVoy account tied to the owner account that logged in to make the exchange. It doesn't only transfer to the "primary" person. Thus when a co-owner, who is NOT listed as the primary owner, logs into his or her account to make the exchange, then the BonVoy points go to their BonVoy account.

It is just like when the non-primary account name logs in under their own login and makes a reservation for timeshare stay, their name, and not the name of the primary, goes on the reservation.

It is all determined by the login account used. I've found in my owner group that many, many spouses do not understand that each person has their own login and names on reservations, exchanges, etc., all are based on the account used to make the request.

IF one can have more than one Bonvoy account number associated with an MVC account and it's various profile, that is news to me and not c/w my understanding.

I don't think that is correct. When I log in to my MVC account, I see my wife's Bonvoy number. Same under her login, it has her Bonvoy number. I believe you can only have one Bonvoy number associated to an ownership and that is tied to every owner and reservation that is made.

This would be news to me also. I only see one Bonvoy number between my wife's and my MVC logins. It is hers and she is the one that used to get Bonvoy Platinum because of it (she is now lifetime).

I will acknowledge that I have no experience turning in either my weeks or points for Bonvoy points and likely never will since even before the turn of the century I didn't think it a reasonable option. So there may be work arounds I am not familiar with when doing so.

There might be, but without my Bonvoy number in my profile, I would suspect this has to be done on the phone vs logged in to the appropriate account.

Agreed, even if possible I'd think it'd have to be a one off done by phone, chat or email.

Do you and your partner have separate MVC accounts (you should)? You will both see your joint ownership. Each of you should have your own Bonvoy # in your own account.

I know separate BonVoy numbers are shown under individual profiles. When this topic first came up some years ago, I had folks who knew how to use their accounts verify the background info for me. When the non-primary member logs into their MVC account and books a reservation, the reservation shows up in that person's BonVoy account. When the primary named account holder's account is used to make the reservation, then it shows up in that person's BonVoy account. If you can't see your BonVoy account number in your MVC account, call and add it.

The Bonvoy number that shows up in each account is the same one. From what I have seen it's not possible to have separate ones listed in the MVC account.

Well, I have multiple friends who are couples and who have timeshares and each of their BonVoy numbers are in their owner accounts. I've had this discussion in my FB group also. It first came up about 4 years ago when I was admin of a different group.
