"Only 24% of college graduates know the First Amendment prohibits establishing an official religion for the United States."

The scariest quote from the discussion section of the quiz.

H

I agree. Most think it's just freedom of speech. Where did you find that, Heath?

I got 28/33, and three of the ones I got wrong were ones on which I was waffling....does that give me half credit on them? pretty please?

I owe $100,000 on my credit card. And during my current fiscal year I pay the interest, but not any of the principal on that debt. I spend exactly the same amount that I make. My revenue and expenditures are IDENTICAL this year.

Does that somehow wipe out my debt? That question had only one right answer. The other three were wrong.

I understood, and I understand. My point is that it was a poorly worded question, with poorly chosen answers.

DH got 30/33, and two that he got wrong he says he knew but hadn't read right

We're both college educators, so I guess we're ahead of the curve of our peers. 55% IS scary.

Officially 28/33, I went back a page and changed an answer to the correct one, but it still counted it as the original answer. So I really made 29/33.

I once took a math exam where there was an equation the length of a Charles Dickens paragraph within parentheses. Solving it would require the quadratic formula, basic calculus, and a calculator with log functions.

At the end of the problem, outside the parentheses, the who shebang was raised to the zeroth power, thus making the answer "1."

Unfair question. But it tested one's ability to read the WHOLE problem before starting it, and one's ability to know that anything to the zeroth power equals one.

I also got 32 of 33.

I'm impressed with how many knowledgeable TUGgers we have. I think we should form the TUG party and run a candidate for president!

How many users are on Tug? It's unlikely even 0.1% have taken the quiz and posted results.

And also, only the people who think to themselves, "Oooh, civics quiz, I think that'll be fun" are likely to take the quiz. And then there's the possibility of people inflating their score as not to appear average.

You couldn't mean to insinuate that TUGgers might not be 110% honest and honorable. Which is not to say that they might take the test twice and post the second score. Then it's a memory test. :)

OK, for the record, I took the test only once, after reading only as far into the thread as I needed to to get the URL.

Scoop, I think you're missing a humor gene.

An answer that I got correct is the one on "government of the people, by the people, for the people."

While it is technically correct that those exact words originated with the Gettysburg address, it is also almost certain that Lincoln got it from other sources. Two usually mentioned:

Chief Justice Marshall in an opinion stated: "The government of the Union, then (whatever may be the influence of this fact on the case), is, emphatically and truly, a government of the people. In form, and in substance, it emanates from them. Its powers are granted by them, and are to be exercised directly on them, and for their benefit."

Senator Daniel Webster in a speech: described the federal government as: "made for the people, made by the people, and answerable to the people"

Actually, I got 100% but admitted to only 31 correct so as not to seem too intelligent.

Only those interested in a civics quiz should be eligible to run :)
