I'm going to be in Chicago early May for a conference. I plan on using Honors points @40K per night for three nights.

Any recommendations for which downtown Hilton property to stay at? It looks like the metro is nearby all of them, is the metro easy to use?

I think I'll be getting free breakfast as a diamond member, any of them serve a better breakfast?

definitely The Conrad Hilton Chicago, overlooks Lake Michigan and Grant Park

I believe the Double Tree is 40K. It's just a few blocks north of the river and a few blocks east of the Magnificent Mile (Michigan Ave.). I also believe that the Navy Pier Trolly has a stop very close to that location (free transportation to certain areas).

If a Points & Money award isn't available (25k points +$85 per night), I'd save my HH points for a better redemption value. Four night stays get you VIP and AXON awards that use far fewer points and properties overseas give you more value per point.

Sometimes it makes sense to pay for the room.

I have stayed at The Hilton Garden Inn on Grand and The Homewood Suites in the same area on points. The Homewood Suites exceeded my expectations and they had breakfast every morning. I like the location in The River North area. They are both within a block of The Red line. Red line will take you right to Wrigely field without any transfers.

Where is the conference being held? The location of the conference and easy transportation would be important to know. Chicago is a big city.

The conference is at the Hilton Chicago at 720 S Michigan Ave

The hotels that are 40K per night are:

Hampton Inn Majestic Theatre District
Hampton Inn Downtown
Hilton Garden - Magnificent Mile
Homewood Suites

Criteria that I am looking for (no order):
1. Quality breakfast
2. Access to Metro since I'm planning on going to a Cubs game (it looks like they are all very close to the metro).
3. Close to eats - Chicago dog, Chicago Pizza
4. Close to sights - Parks, restaurants, jazz clubs
5. Close to the conference - If it is easy to use the metro , they all could work out. Although the Hampton Inn Theatre district is within walking distance (about a mile).
6. Special Note - It looks like Homewood suites offers drinks and food in the evening.

swj, in my second post I meant to say Hilton Chicago across the street from grant park, not The Conrad. Looks like the conference is at the place I meant to suggest ( you say its still not an option due to value)

But fyi, the Grand Ballroom in the Hilton Chicago is the ballroom from the end of the Harrison Ford movie, The Fugitive. The scene where he confronts his old friend and the person who ultimately had his wife killed and Harrison framed, when he confronts him he is giving a speech in the Grand Ballroom to Dr.'s about a new drug. Now you have something to daydream about should the conf. get boring.

Fyi, right behind the hotel is a place called "Harold's Chicken Shack", hands down the best fried chicken in the city.

Stay at The Hilton Chicago. The location is ideal for the meeting and for enjoyment of downtown Chicago.

The Hilton Chicago is 50K points - I would only be able to stay there 2 nights. With the others I can get 3 nights (with the 20K bonus points).

Which one do you recommend or are they all about the same?

The hotels on your short list are all very different. The Hilton Garden Inn on the Magnificent Mile has a great location. However, it is not as nice as The Chicago Hilton or The Drake. If you can afford to pay cash for HHonors AmEx for your third night, I would still go with The Chicago Hilton. If you plan to shop till you drop, The Hilton Garden Inn has the best location in town. ( I use to ride my bicycle from Northwestern to Grant Park while in college. I love Grant Park.)
