My daughter will be in Chevy Chase, MD for a week in July. We don't want to be too far away in case of emergency. We are looking for a hotel 20-30 minutes away, close to a metro station so the rest of us can explore Washington DC. Looking at the Metro Map, and a Maryland Map, it looks like the Red Line is the way to go. But I am not sure of the areas. Can anyone recommend hotels that would be suitable?

Thanks
Bill

I don't know this area but I have found a neat tool for choosing hotels in areas I don't know. Go to tripadvisor.com and type in the name of the town you would like to stay in under the hotels section. A selection of hotels will show up with a small map on the right side. Focus on the map. It will have pin placements of different hotels and shows you exactly where they are and what they are. You can zoom in and out of this map to get a really accurate idea of where each hotel is. Addresses and phone numbers are given on the left side for each correlating hotel/pin placemet.

Good luck!

Red Line is best. There will be lots of good choices near Bethesda, White Flint, and Rockville. All are very safe areas. Montgomery County, Maryland is very nice and quite upscale. All stops on the red line outside the DC border are in Montgomery County.

Thanks for the plug Matt.

I live in Montgomery County!

There are many nice hotels within driving distance to the Shady Grove metro station in Rockville and many of them have a shuttle to the station. There are nice hotels in right in Bethesda too, but I expect they will be more expensive.

My mom lives there, and I visit here often. The hotels in the area are more expensive during the week than the weekend as they service a lot of business travelers. I prefer to stay in Rockville/Bethesda

Thanks for the help. I started looking and I found this hotel: Crowne Plaza Hotel
WASHINGTON DC - ROCKVILLE located at 3 RESEARCH COURT, which they advertise as close to the Shady Grove Station. It looks okay, and the price is quite reasonable... Anybody have any thoughts
Thanks
Bill

That's right by my kids's doctor. Mostly office buildings and professional offices there. There is one mediocre restaurant within walking distance. Probably a good a place as any to sleep.

Did you check the rates at the Marriott in the Washingtonian Center. It's a couple of miles away in a very nice commercial development that includes retail stores, movies, restaurants, small shops and the like.

Charles,
I have to ask.............

Don't you have an extra bedroom? :whoopie:

Kidding of course. :)

Thanks,
Looks Great - at least I know what neighborhood to check
Here's the difference
$219/night - Marriott in the Washingtonian Center
$89/night - Crowne Plaza Hotel Washington DC - ROCKVILLE
I don't want to sound cheap - but that's over $600 difference for 5 nights !!
I'll keep checking reviews etc.

Cheap sounds good, eating in DC is not cheap, if you have to use a car, gas is not cheap, museums and monuments are FREE!

Being near the Metro is great because it is far better than driving into DC! If you are in DC in July, it will be hot & muggy - so be prepared! :)

What a great experience

Well, we changed our plans a bit, and decided to drop our daughter off for the week and come home. So we stayed at the Marriot Washingtonian that Charles recommended. We got it for $99 for Sat nite. What a great area and restaurants. Now we will go back on Thursday to pick my daughter up and planned on staying over and coming home on Friday. On checking out of the Marriot today, we inquired about what was the best rate we could get (since it is $219/nite during the week). They checked some rates and asked if we had any possible discounts (AAA - AARP etc). And ... we got the room for $99 for Thursday Night. I couldn't believe it; thanks Charles and all other Tuggers for your help.

Glad you liked it!

There are a ton of hotels 'round my neck of the woods, but most of them are right next to major highways and or business parks. The Marriott at Washingtonian center is the only one I can think of that is in a nice-ish area where you might actually go for a walk at night, feed some ducks or geese at the lake, see a movie, have an adult beverage, and grab a bite to eat, and so on.
