we want to rent a car in boston on jun 29th and return at newark , nj on july the 6th . so far all the price i have seen for a compact car are around $400 . any ideas ?

I know it's not a car, but would you consider Amtrack to Penn Station, and then on to NJ?

we need a car

we are going over to new hampshire for the weekend and then down to AC for the rest of the week . thanks for the suggestion though .

We rented a car for a one-way trip a year or so back. I remember I discovered that Hertz does not charge a fee for dropping off in a different location, and one other car-rental place also does not charge a fee...Budget maybe?

The rate per day was a bit higher on the Hertz car, but being able to return it at a different location made it work.

I've used Avis for a one-way rental. While there was no "fee" the pricing is different than if I'd picked up and returned at the same location. I can't remember if it was some kind of flat fee, or by the mile.

We just got a one way for my daughter, Phoenix to Sacramento, four days in a full size car for $140. While this may not seem cheap it was hundnreds of dollars cheaper than any other car rental. Check out Avis. :D

How about renting a car for the weekend in Boston; train to NJ; rent a car in NJ for the remainder of your trip? Try as many scenarios as you can to find the price you want to pay.
