I received my 100,000 Ultimate Rewards bonus points from the new Chase Sapphire Reserve, and now I have a question. If we were to transfer the points to SW Rapid Rewards, will the 100,000 Ultimate Rewards be counted toward the 110,000 needed to qualify for a SW Companion Pass?

Great minds think alike ;) but all my Google searches showed that would not be possible :bawl:

No, I don't believe it will because UR is not a SW partner.

These are their partners: https://www.southwest.com/rapidrewards/earn-with-partners

Personally, I am using part of the 100,000 UR to top off my Marriott account. And then purchase a Marriott Travel package which will then send SW the 110,000 points needed for the CP.

If you find out a way via a SW partener, the key is to do this transfer AFTER Jan 1st. The CP will then be good for the remainder of 2017 and all of 2018

The answer is no it will not count toward CP. However, you can transfer the points to your SW Rapid Rewards account 1 for 1 and use them to travel free. I recently did it and have 2 round trips to Florida for 2 people all free (minus gov't fees of $5.60 each way pp).

Your could transfer UR to either Marriott or Hyatt, and then from there onto SW. Don't know what conversion rates are for the transfers.

I think those transfers do qualify. Double check, as I have not done it, but I have read that.

Oh my goodness, Sandy! I would love to do that, and I have 270K Marriott points right now. Rick was going to get both SW cards and do the spend right at the beginning of the year. Marriott points are a great way to do it. I read that somewhere as well but didn't think about it until you just mentioned it.

Thank you!

Chase Ultimate Rewards

Transferring the Ultimate Rewards directly to Southwest do not count for companion pass. Transferring the Ultimate Rewards to Hyatt, then transferring the Hyatt points to Southwest do count for the Companion Pass. The Ultimate reward points transfer to Hyatt at a 1 to 1 ratio. 100,000 Hyatt points would equal 60,000 Southwest points that will count for the companion pass. You could then apply for a Chase Southwest Visa where you can get 50,000 Southwest points and those together get you to the CP. A word of caution you want to time the spending requirement and the Hyatt transfer to occur early in January, so then you will have almost 2 years to use the CP.

Good luck.

Points Guy has a lot of info on this:

It looks like points transferred from Hyatt also work. Hyatt is better. 50,000 points = 30,000 SW points toward companion pass. You need 110,000 Southwest Points for the companion pass. We plan to transfer a lot of those wonderful UR points to Hyatt this next few months. January, the points will go to Southwest. Awesome!

At 270,000 points, you have enough for a 7 night travel package (or 5 night if you own MVC). This amount would get you a cat 1-5 cert and 120,000 SW points. Those SW points have always been CP eligible. Do this in Jan and get two years for the CP.

So what would I do with 7 nights in a hotel? Is it 7 consecutive nights? I have so many timeshares to use, I don't know what I would do with a hotel room for 7 consecutive nights.

If you pay the points in January, you don't have to book it yet?

Correct, you don't have to book the stay right away. The certificate is good for one year but they will extend for another year if you can't use it within the year. If you are a Marriott Vacation Club owner, you can also book five night travel packages.

Very helpful, thanks Dioxide. The redemption rate is good for those five-night stays. I just looked at it through my Marriott Vacation Ownership log-in.

I can probably talk Rick into a short trip somewhere with no timeshares. There are a few places I want to visit that do not have timeshares nearby (or are hard to get).

I transferred 90K Starwood points to get those 270K Marriott points. Those points aren't worth much with Starwood for airfare, but transfer to Marriott, and they are very valuable.

Do keep in mind that you pay a premium for using the five night packages vs the seven packages. The premium gets more expensive the higher you go in the category tiers.

EXACTLY my issue! I've been searching for quite some time to determine where I want to go that a "regular" hotel room will be ok for our family travel.
I saw some negative posts about the category 1-5 hotels, but I find Residence Inn hotels to be quite comfortable, and a sofa-bed in those makes for a nice one bedroom accommodation. The kitchens are much better than Peacock Suites, for example.
