Chase Sapphire Reserve is changing... Alternative cards with high points for MVC maintenance fee payments?

FWIW, I was talking to the CSR rep about the reduction from 3x to 1x for timeshare MFs. I'm leaning toward prepaying a hefty Maui set of invoices in after my August closing date. She suggested I get them through the system before October, when the changeover occurs.

Then figure out what to do go forward, as that was the big points driver for my Chase points each year.
I spoke to a CSR rep about my past timeshare maintenance fee payments to see what the codes were. She said the Marriott timeshare maintenance fee payments were under a code that would count as "hotel" and should get 4x points but my other timeshare maintenance fee payments (Bluegreen) came under "timeshare" and would only get 1x points.

I'm going to prepay my Marriott maintenance fees ahead of time, just in case...

Well that's more than a little interesting. 4 CSR points is worth about the same as 6 Bonvoy points to me (and less than 14 Hilton points) but if DVC MFs count as Disney Hotel spend then it becomes more interesting to keep my CSR.

That is interesting. Marriott is a lot of my fees, but Sheraton Broadway and Westin are far more of the fees we pay. Will those get coded the same as Marriott?

I've been crossing my fingers that MVC fees would code as "hotel" under the new card terms since I noticed that they were simply categorized as "Marriott" under merchant type on my past statements. I was hesitant to call and ask for fear of tipping Chase off and losing this benefit. It would be great if MVC fees earn 4x, as I really do like all the travel protections/insurance of the Sapphire Reserve card and typically use it for all my travel purchases, plus my many thousands of $ of MVC maintenance fees.

I just used some of my Chase points this week to book economy flights to Europe next summer for my family of 5 for 80k points (16k/person) each way. Another example (for my use case at least) of the superior value of Chase points to Bonvoy points. 80k Bonvoy points might buy me a $400 hotel night, while these 80k Chase UR points just saved me $4,000 in airfare. I usually get an even bigger $/pt conversion on my Chase points but for these flights just booked economy which isn't quite as favorable in terms of $/pt.

Are the travel protections of the CSR really unique to the CSR? I thought they were basically the standard travel protections that come with every Visa Infinite card.

One quick note if there are others considering the BofA Premium Rewards Elite: I learned today that you can’t join the Preferred Rewards Program without opening a Bank of America checking account. So it isn’t enough to have a fat brokerage account and the credit card, you also need to open a checking account. The account won’t have a monthly fee so long as you qualify for Preferred Rewards membership ($20,000 on deposit with BofA/Merrill) and you don’t need to use it, you could just park $100 in if.

I need another checking account like I need a hole in my head, so that’s what I will do, just open the account but probably won’t use if.

The requirement for a checking account is clearly stated, but somehow I had missed it previously.

+ BoA does take it's time to update one's Preferred Rewards Tier, after joining, so may wish to hold off spending big bucks until one's preferred rewards tier is updated to Platinum Honors.
Has been a few weeks for me..
Just sharing so folks don't get upset..
(I got this for the long game so no rush for any major short term spend on this but just saying)..
TY

Thanks for that reference. Unfortunately it doesn't include the B of A card we've been discussing. For anyone who's interested, I'll paste in a comprehensive comparison between the travel and protection difference between the CSR and PRE cards, courtesy of AI:

Travel Protection Comparison: Bank of America Premium Rewards Elite vs Chase Sapphire Reserve

Chase Sapphire Reserve Travel Protection

Annual Fee: $795

Key Travel Insurance Benefits:

Key Differences

Chase Sapphire Reserve Advantages:

  1. Higher trip cancellation coverage: Up to $10,000 per covered traveler vs $5,000 per person Guide to Chase Sapphire® Travel Insurance | Chase for Bank of America
  2. Emergency medical coverage: Up to $2,500 with a $50 deductible Chase Sapphire Reserve Travel Insurance Benefits Guide 2025 | LendingTree - Bank of America doesn't offer this
  3. Roadside assistance: Included with Chase, not offered by Bank of America
  4. More comprehensive coverage: Described as "the most comprehensive suite of travel protections available through built-in benefits" The InfatuationChase
Bank of America Premium Rewards Elite Advantages:

  1. Lower annual fee: $550 vs $795 for Chase Sapphire Reserve
  2. Same rental car coverage: Both offer primary coverage up to $75,000
  3. Same emergency evacuation coverage: Both offer up to $100,000
Similarities:

  • Both offer primary rental car insurance up to $75,000
  • Both provide $500 trip delay coverage
  • Both offer $100/day baggage delay coverage for up to 5 days
  • Both include lost luggage reimbursement up to $3,000
  • Both provide emergency evacuation coverage up to $100,000
  • Neither charges foreign transaction fees

Bottom Line

Chase continues to lead the field with the best automatic travel protections Guide to Ultra-Premium Credit Card Travel Protections, offering more comprehensive coverage overall, particularly with the addition of emergency medical/dental coverage and roadside assistance. However, the Bank of America Premium Rewards Elite provides very similar core travel protections at a significantly lower annual fee ($245 less).

The choice between them may depend on whether you value the Chase Sapphire Reserve's additional medical coverage and higher trip cancellation limits enough to justify the extra annual fee cost.

Merrill told me that there was a team which could pre-set the Preferred Rewards Tier, and so I was planning to reach out to them in a day or two and see if I could get that done so that I can start spending. So you might want to reach out to them and see if they can do that for you.

? Flying Blue or Iberia Avios
Good call! Yes, Iberia on the way out (booked via British Airways) and Flying Blue on the way home (booked via Flying Blue, with the nice perk of a free 4-night stopover in Amsterdam for no additional points).

Stupid question.

How do you do this? Is it a call to Flying Blue when you book the reward seats? I'm sure I can look it up, but I've never been able to make it happen.

Yes, you have to call Flying Blue to make a booking with a free stopover. As an example: if you find a flight you'd like to book with points that has a connection (usually in CDG or AMS), you can call and ask for a stopover (up to a year!) in the connection city. For instance, if the flight is Zurich-Paris-Washington, you can call and ask them to book you the flight as Zurich-Paris and Paris-Washington on separate days on a single booking. The taxes will increase, but the points amount should stay the same.

*May add that many/most rewards programs allow you to book seats online in seconds, including for their partners
(say using AS to book short-haul AA metal flights)

+ can easily xfr points from Amex MR or Cap 1 or Chase UR to airline online; most instantaneous; some take some time...

Always do a test transfer for a few points & if all good, xfr what you need, when you need & book your reward trip!

Fancier redemptions (with stopovers) require reaching Cust svc reps (although can book AS international flight with free stopover online).

I believe @Zenichiro, @Wahoo & @brp & others, are far more advanced in this space & may give more useful info/guidance, than me...
TY!

That’s all good advice, but I’d be cautious about doing a test transfer. Some airlines will delay a second transfer by up to 48 hours if it follows immediately after the first. A safer approach is to call the airline and ask them to hold the reservation—they’ll usually hold it for 24 hours, giving you time to transfer your points.

For example, i see an Air France flight bookable with miles that i want, i can call them and ask them to place it on hold for 24 hours before i transfer the points? Do i see it in my account on hold? How do i finish the transaction? A second call once the miles are in my account? My only experience was transferring chase to avios and once and i think chase is pretty instantaneous but i love the idea of limiting the risk. What airlines have done this for you and is it free?

Can I hold an Air France flight using miles before transferring points?

Yes, you can. Just call Air France at 1-800-375-8723 and ask them to put the award flight on hold. They usually give you 24 to 48 hours, but it’s good to confirm the exact time.

Will I see the hold in my Flying Blue account?

No, you won’t see it online. The hold is managed by their phone agents, so make sure you note down the booking details during the call.

How do I book once my miles are transferred?

Once your Flying Blue account has the miles, call Air France again to complete the booking. You can’t finalize it online.

Is there a fee to hold a flight?

No, Air France doesn’t charge anything to hold an award ticket.

How do Chase point transfers fit into this?

Chase points can take up to a week to show up in Flying Blue, though they’re often quicker. Holding the flight first gives you a buffer and helps avoid losing the seat while waiting.

Do other airlines let you hold award tickets too?

Yes, American lets you hold online for up to 5 days, Delta gives 24 hours, and United allows up to 7 days. Policies vary, so it’s worth checking with the specific airline or alliance.

Any final tips?

Use Pointsyeah daydream explorer tool to find best prices it is free and easy to use. Seats.Aero is also free but only searching out two months or so. But I prefer Pointsyeah.

Me but I searched for Air France phone number and rules as I wasn’t 100% sure. I mainly use United, Copa, Avianca, AirCanada and Virgin Airlines.
Thank you all! You really help us.

I still feel stupid, but I guess you can't fix that.

The Kids love London, I like AMS. Probably not what the internet thinks…. I like the Canals, the vibe in the Old Town and the cool weather in Summer. Maybe the later is the real triggering point when AC is not likely at Airbnb…. Watching F-1 in the roaring ‘20’s theater was a treasure. I loved it.

Anyway, I'm so locked in on VA I can't deviate. LAX seems to have such limited values (please don’t hate). VA at times has deals, usually poor ones I’m sure but it’s easy for me.

We upgraded at the airport for one and me at the last minute. It wasn’t cheap (and it wasn’t super expensive vs. losing a day) but seemed to be somewhat of value from Premium to Upper Class. Money does seem to talk… if ever so slightly…….

My concern is wasting money on things that: a. don’t matter, b. more importantly there are cheaper alternatives to that are the same or better…. I think B is the reason I’m addicted to RESALE TIMESHARES. I don’t mind paying, but to waste money…. We work too hard for that. 😊

No problem. Try the Pointsyeah site. You can search by state or look up deals like USA to Europe for the lowest mileage rates. Just booked Delta One through Virgin Atlantic for ~27k miles thanks to a transfer bonus.

We fly to Panama often on Copa business 30k miles from Chicago. Not the flashiest cabin, but way better than most AA options to Latin America or the Caribbean.

My renewal is Nov 1st, that timing sucks.
