Changes to club Wyndham?

Okay, has anyone else noticed some odd changes? I’m an owner, went to bonnet creek this week, specifically asked for an update and was told they weren’t doing updates. Strange right ?! I know they’re doing updates because I see tours going on. The kid at the desk told me if you do enough and don’t purchase they lock you out of updates ? The reason I wanted an update was I had a party weekend scheduled which was cancelled on me due to tour capacity. When I attempted to reschedule to a different location or time they told me even if I re book it will be cancelled again because they are invitation only. Well, that shouldn’t be a problem because I get the emails every other week for new party weekends…. Wrong. I was told my account wasn’t eligible for any party weekends at this point in time and I would be contacted when I was eligible in the future. Important to note: account has always been paid on time and always up to date so not a payment issue, have been an owner for 7 years, initial contract purchased from Wyndham, second one purchased resale approx 5 years ago.

What’s your credit score? The reason I ask is because it might have something to do with this.
 
Wyndham marketing department does soft credit scores on all prospective customers. If a persons score falls below a certain level they do not invite you for “updates” or tours. They have been doing this for several years. When you don’t qualify they make up other reasons or excuse as to why.

I doubt the "all" part is true.

1) Wyndham does not have my SSN. How can they do any kind of credit check? (I bought resale, and left the SSN box empty on the transfer paperwork.)

2) My credit score runs around 800. It is very rare that I get invited to an owner update at my most frequented resort. When I do, it is usually a rookie in marketing who must not know about whatever do not tour signal is on my ownership. The last couple of times, the front desk did not even send me to the "concierge desk". Sometimes, rarely, I get a call after scheduling an update and politely disinvited due to "overbooking." Once I showed up at 8 a.m. for an update. There was another couple there who had clearly done many updates in the past. Our tours were cancelled due to "an overbooking situation" but we were offered free coffee and a donut. I have received so many gift cards over the years, I took a cup of coffee and a chocolate donut and went on my way without raising a stink.

It is rare that I do not get offered to schedule an update at other resorts, but it has been over a year since I have been to a resort with a sales office, other than my most frequented resort, so maybe things have changed.

Yes it’s all. A company does not need your social security # or your permission to do a soft pull. It’s called a marketing pull. It’s how you get pre-approval offers in the mail for credit cards and other things that require credit.

Those marketing mails are usually prescreened offers and the result of the credit bureaus providing contact information on thousands of people based on a set of criteria. Companies pay the credit bureaus for the leads, but there is no credit pull behind them. Per your last link, soft pulls do appear on your credit report. Credit cards that you do business with regularly will do soft pulls to see if they want to extend additional credit to you in the form of a higher credit limit.

It’s not just leads. Company’s can contract with the credit bureau company’s and have access to pull individual’s credit score instantly with just your name and address (sometimes a date of birth). This is a soft pull and does not affect a person’s score or show on credit report to other companies (only on some reports you can see yourself

I know these things because I use some of these tools in my line of work.

I know for a fact that timeshare companies have been using these tools and technology since at least 2009.

Not to get way off topic, but some timeshare companies have been doing this since 2009-2010 because of fallout from the financial markets crash around those years related to faulty mortgage paper.

Timeshare companies have always bundled and sold the paper on timeshare loans.

Believe it or not timeshare paper has preformed consistently well over the years, but the banks and investment companies (Wall Street) who buy the timeshare paper/receivables (timeshare loans made to you and me if you ever purchased and financed a timeshare through a developer) have gotten more picky about the type of paper they buy (meaning they only want to buy timeshare loans from people with good credit) so they have forced the hand of larger timeshare developers to me more picky with who they finance timeshare sales to (meaning timeshare companies have had to tighten up credit criteria for potential customers) therefore not wanting to market to or sell to customers with bad / lower credit scores.

So moral of the story, if a time share company is turning you away from doing a presentation or “update” it’s most likely because of this (or some other pre-qualification issue like not having your spouse with you or being under their income threshold) they just don’t like to tell you this when it happens because they don’t want to confront you directly about it and have to explain why it is what they do.

Imagine if the marketing rep told you “sorry you don’t qualify because your credit score is to low” most people would react (like some posters on here are reacting) and start to question and confront the marketing agent saying things like “how do you know my credit score?” Or “you can’t pull my credit without my permission or social security number” and then the marketing agent would have to waste time trying to explain to the person or people who have no idea about this type of thing on how all this works (like I am having to do now).

There is very little chance of getting a straight answer to that question from the sales reps, although I'm sure they would be happy to come up with one for you.

OP should consider himself lucky. I wish I was on the do-not-update list. I actually asked the parking pass person at a recent stay why I'm not on the list. No should mean no. It's really the worst part of the Wyndham experience.

email Wyndham and ask to be put on the do-not-update list at donotcall@wyn.com

That's what I did last year and since then had five check-ins with no hassle.

It's also possible that they are currently booked up with better prospects than you. You may end up finding out that in a few weeks the email offers return and you are invited to tour on your next stay. If it continues and you really want to tour, after summer you might contact owner services and see why you were flagged for do not tour and see if it can be changed. For now just enjoy the hassle free check ins.

I would bet they have your SSN (or that of someone that closely matches your Name, DOB, and address that they believe is you) on a marketing database even if they don't have it on your customer data. There are many resources available for companies to get your information Lexis-Nexis, Harte Hanks, and other companies that you do business with. Data is bought and sold all the time, including SSNs.
 
I have also been placed on the "Do-Not-Gift" list without my requesting it and have been trying to get off of it (crazy, I know, but I make good use of the AMEX cards and rewards points and am usually the first one up in the morning at the resorts and enjoy a chance to hear the latest sales tactics). I have actually been placed on the list, come off of it for about 4 updates, and then was placed back onto it. This has nothing to do with my credit score (also around 800) or willingness to buy (I have made two retail purchases at resorts and three via Telesales). My suspicion is that I was placed on the list either by the Telesales rep or by one of the reps that I met with at an owner update at a resort. I find it strange that several TUGers have posted that they attend many updates each year without making a purchase and do not get placed on the list, while some of us do. I tried emailing the donotcall@wyn.com address and asking to be taken off of the list, but several months after doing so I was still not offered an update at Glacier Canyon last month. This just seems to be rather random, and if anyone has any insight, I'd love to hear it.

If you've done rentals that will put you on the list.

I do remember about 2 - 3 years ago Checking into Shawnee, I got a wonderful surprise. At the Marketing desk picking up wristband ids / keys, I was told there are no owner updates being held. The Wyndham team was only asking non owners to have Time Share overview and tour. Man, I was HAPPY! Everytime since most recently May 2022, I was greeted with Invite to be UPDATED. No Thanks....afk324
 
I just did an update at Desert Blue. The guy started 10 mins late, started lying to me about how if I cancelled resale it went into a cancellation bucket and got developer benefits and it was a glitch that I could exploit.

I looked him dead in the eyes, said I prob know this program about as well as you do and I don’t appreciate you lying to me. Why would you try and sell me an expensive program based on a glitch that could be fixed at any time.

He looked at hey watch, and said “I’ll be back in 30 mins and will take you to gifting, just relax for the time being”

If they’re nice I’m nice. He started talking down to me like I was stupid and that went over like a lead balloon.

At the end of the day, I’ll do an update just about any time they ask me because I like free *bleep* and it’s impossible to bully me into a sale :)
