Hi, I am looking for advice. My sister and I own a DRI week, she was recently divorced and legally changed her name. We called DRI today and were advised that we must pay the $275 fee to change ownership documents. Has anyone else experienced this issue, and if so how was it resolved.
And advice will be welcomed.

When my dh and I divorced I also changed my name legally (twice). I never changed from my former married name on the timeshare documents for the timeshare we'd own jointly in California. We did a quit claim, but the paperwork stayed in my original married name. Since then (1982) I've had no problems. The resort seems to find me just fine to send the maintenance fees and the tax assessor finds me for the property taxes.

Do you, or your sister, receive the maintenance bills? If they come to you, I wouldn't worry about it at all.

There is no need to go thru the time and expense of changing one's name in either the public records or a membership account, other than for one's own vanity. Its really only necessary for certain government docs, like drivers licenses, passports, voter registration, IRS and Social Security.

If and when it becomes time to transfer the TS to a 3rd party, she may need to establish her identity as the former -- which can be done thru an affidavit and a copy of the decree used to adopt her new name.

We recently changed the title by having our lawyer do it. We use the same lawyer for most things. We pay hourly fees to him.

Thank you for reading and replying. This is what I thought, however she was concerned that we would have to fork over the money. I am goign to have the primary name and address changed to mine, that way there will be no USPS mistake of non-delivery because of the name change.
