Where are the Cenotes on Cozumel? Which one(s) are the best? Is there a charge for some of these? Thanks, Pat

Uh...there are cenotes on Cozumel?? We've been there for diving 7 times and the only cenotes I have heard of are on the mainland, on the Mexican Riviera. If there are cenotes for diving on Cozumel, I'd like to know about them, too.

I didn't know what cenotes are so looked it up and found a very nice web site here but it is not located at Cozumel, I believe. These caves sure look beautiful. :)

Pat, the cenotes I'm aware of are south of Playa del Carmen just north of Tulum. There are several of them, however I don't know how many are available to the public, due to possible dangers. I think there are a couple where you can enter by paying a small entry fee. When I went to Dos Ojos (or something like that, means two eyes in Spanish) it was with a dive group. We also had snorkelers with us. The scuba diving is unbelievable as you work your way though the caverns. The snorkeling was just OK at this site because you could not go very far on the surface. If I remember correctly, the big amusement type park in that area ( Xarcet ?sp) has a cenote the visiters can float thru on innertubes. It was something I'll never forget.
Fins up!!! Marty

We took a tour from Playa del Carmen it was the Coba Pac Chen tour and it was GREAT, the cenote was by far the best part...... you can see my pictures here if you want.

Nice pictures, Kevin!

We visited a cenote on our way back from our Chichen Itza tour. There wasn't time for a dive, but we swam. There were stairs carved from the stone that led down to the water, as opposed to having to be lowered/lifted in and out.

Thanks for everyone's feedback...there are cenotes in Cozumel, from what I have read. They are Aerolito de Paraiso, 3 Potrillos, and Roca Bomba. Does anyone know anything about these...there is little info on the internet that I could find.

Ladycody, many thanks for the articles. That first one was a real education! I'm not a big fan of sinkhole diving (we've done a couple in FL) but it will make a fun excursion on our 8th trip to Cozumel (planned currently for 2008.) We just love the island, and seeing another facet of it is very appealing.

Thank you for sharing this with us!

Cat, I wasn't a big fan of sinkhole diving after diving them in Florida either. But the divers on the Mexico board at http://www.scubaboard.com convinced me to try it. We dove the Chuc Mool cenote while we were at the Mayan Palace. It's truely amazing. I'm so glad we went. Nothing like the Florida sinkholes I was in oh so many years ago.

Pat, You might want to ask about the Cozumel sink holes on scubaboard.com

What did you like about it, Judy? Is there much of anything to see in the way of fish/critters? Is it something you'd make the effort to do everytime you go to Cozumel, or was once enough?

Hardly any fish or critters. Lots of underwater limestone formations. I have photos. I'll try to find a host for them and post the link. There are some photos on http://www.scubaboard.com you might want to look at.
I'd like to do as much cenote diving as my budget allows. It's quite expensive.
Oh yes, the water was colder than the Caribbean. I needed a shorty in the Sea, but a full wetsuit in the cenote.
