Cell phone use in Mexico?

We've switched our cell phone plan to include Mexico for our upcoming trip. When we are in Mexico, how will we need to dial phones in the USA? Will we need to add extra numbers for dialing? Also, when we leave our number for the folks back here to call us while we're in Mexico, do they need to add any numbers, or just dial our regular number?

My husband did this the last time he went to Rocky Point. He called TMobile and had this service added. The fee was $1.35 a minute for calls; 35 cents for text messages. Unfortunately he could get no reception even though he said he did see a telecom network in Rocky Point that was on his network services. He wasn't excited enough to check it out but he heard that's how it's done.

BTW, the same dialing process is used for calling cards you can by at almost any store (and are considerably cheaper). You can also get an unlocked cell phone and buy a SIM card in Mexico if you want to make a lot of calls and not have to use public or room phones. Phone cards while cheap, can get very expensive if the hotel/condo charges for outgoing calls. Our recent $10 phone card wound up costing almost $200 in room charges.

I bought an unlocked phone for use overseas and use it frequently. If you do, just make sure it has the right GSM bands (900-1800 in Europe and 850-1900 in North and Central America) or get a tri or quad band phone.

Cheers[

I use my cell phone all the time in Puerto Vallarta and Cancun...no problems, except possibly, for some unknown reason, inside public bathrooms at the resorts (too much cement, I think)

You might also consider text messaging. When my daughter was in Cabo last year, she just text messaged us and it was only five cents a message.

We have been using skype because of the many calls we make and recieve. All of our friends traveling with us use our skype as well. Two cents a minute from Mexico to USA. www.skype.com

We have AT&T. We always add the World Traveler package when we travel at $5.99 per month, or the Mexico one for $4.99. It basically reduces the per minute rate. Have called from Turkey, Croatia, Prague, and Mexico both Cancun, Cabo and Puerto Vallarta. Reception is great.....For the US...just dial 001 and the area code and number....

What cell reception do they have in Cancun - The Royal Resorts?

I had no problem using my cell phone (Verizon) while at the RM a couple of weeks ago. I did need to call Verizon ahead of time to enable my plan for international calling, and I updated tower access (I think it's *228) when I arrived. The cost on my plan is .99/min, so our calls were short and sweet. Skype is definitely the way to go if you do alot of international travel.

We have T-Mobile, the phone reception was fine in Cabo. Text messaging was $.35 each outgoing and $.10 each incoming. Be careful... it does add up.

Phone in Mexico

I have ATT and have been to Cabo Mazatlan and PV and have had no problems, I do have their Mexico plan however.

I Have AT&T and use their world wide plan when traveling outside the US. The cost is $5.99 /month but is prorated by the day so I add it on the day I leave for Mexico or wherever and cancel it the day I get back so I am only charged for the days I am out of the US. With the WW plan the cost is 59 cents per minute. It works just fine in Cancun/Riviera Maya.
