Car rental on Kauai? What's the latest?

Our employer perk is also through Avis. Sometimes it is better than Costco and other times it is not. One perk of the corporate code is that it includes CDW as well as Avis Preferred. I just get a text before my pickup time that tells me what space my rental car is in and I go straight to the garage. If I don't get a text, they will often have their Preferred desk open in the garage where I grab the keys and go.

Last time we were on Maui, we booked a mid-size, which lets us pick any car on the Emerald Club Isle. Since there were 4 of us with plenty of luggage, we got a monster sized Ford Expedition. We didn't have to put luggage on anybody's lap. Of course, a giant SUV has problems fitting into Hawaii sized parking spaces. We'd have to cruise the basement of Kaanapali Beach Club looking for one easy enough to get in and out. Luggage for 4 adults won't fit in most mid-sized cars.

It's a fantastic card. I was hesitant at first, but with the lounge access at DEN for only Capital One Venture X members, and the discounts I have gotten on rental cars, it's been a fantastic card to own. We have gotten 3 car rentals for the best rates I have seen anywhere, so far, and we have only had the car for 3 months.

Interesting. I just jumped through the hoops to see about getting the Venture X card, and they say they can't pre-approve me.

They don't say why. With virtually no debt, a perfect credit history, and a credit score above 850, I wonder why they don't like me. Hmm...

EDIT: Just got an email. Downloaded a letter and whatnot. A lot of extra hoop-jumping just to be told they couldn't verify my data because I put a freeze on my credit after a recent Citi credit card compromise. They could have said something. Now I need to decide if I want to go through the hassle of unlocking my credit bureau accounts and try this again... (Man, who knew this was going to be so hard ? I just want to a decent rental car rate, LOL!)

I have used Tracey before and am using her again in April. It is a bit more expensive possibly but walking out of the airport luggage area into the car is worth it To me.

Hey All. Going to spend a week on Kauai next October. It's been a few years, and I'm out of practice. I'm wondering where/how to find the best car rental rates these days. Costco Travel is showing me over $800 for a week in a Standard size car. Discount Hawaii Car Rental has similar rates. Anybody know of another way to get a lower rate? We'll be four adults with luggage, so we'll need at least a mid-size or larger.

We were in Kauai a year ago and rented from their airport Budget location. Big mistake!

We arrived and had to wait in a long line for over two hours in order to reach the counter. Then they provided us a car which was not only dirty (really dirty) and only had less than a half tank of gas (supposed to be full when rented). Needless to say we weren't happy!

Grabbed someone and told them about the gas and he took the car (with my spouse in the passenger seat because she was tired of standing) and took off for 10 minutes in order to fill the gas tank.

Needless to say, overall a bad experience and we won't use Budget on Kauai again. They weren't staffed properly and were very disorganized.

On the other hand, we have used Budget while in San Diego and found them to be excellent!

No. They were when rental cars were scarce, but in some places (mostly on Maui) the cars were being left in unauthorized locations for pick up. There have also been horror stories. What I don't like about Turo is that many times they require you to take out additional insurance, and if anything happens to the car you don't have a back up.
