Can't Rent Points Until All Current Points Are Used???

All I have currently available for use are Credit Pooled points. I attempted to rent points during the express reservation window because I do not want to use my remaining credit pooled points since they give me more flexibility than rented points for future extended planning vacations.
The option to rent or borrow that normally showed up in the past did not show up on the web site so I called into a VC and Wyn Web support.
I was told via a manager that I cannot rent points until all of my available points are used up. It was not always this way. I am wondering when this changed. Anybody have this problem? I am actually blind and the directory is not compatible with any of the screen readers that I use so it’s tough for me to extract information from the directory.

Thanks in advance.

I've always read that you can buy enough points to complete only your last night if needed.

Thanks Scootr5, were you completely out of points when the option to rent presented itself? I.E. If you go to book a "mock" reservation right now and you have points available for use does the option to rent present itself?

If you are within 90 days or less from your check-in date, you can rent as many points as you need to complete the reservation. The restriction that you can only rent enough for the last night's stay applies when you are 10 months to 91 days from check-in.

I don't credit pool much at all so can't speak to it using your credit pooled points first. The directory says you can rent if you don't have enough points to complete your reservation. I would call and talk to a different VC, or maybe even Owner Care, and tell them what you are trying to do. If the website doesn't let you do what you want to, I would ask a VC or OC to do it. I'd also ask them to do it at the online rate ($8 per 1,000 version $10 per 1,000 if you call in). If you can't do what you need via the website, you shouldn't have to pay extra for a VC to do it.

I normally don't have any credit pooled points. If I am out of points, the option to rent (or borrow) to complete a reservation automatically presents itself during the booking process. It'll show total points required, total points available, and say I don't have enough points to complete the reservation. It's on that screen that it then displays the option to rent or borrow.

I believe you have verified that what the manager said is correct. The option to rent only presents itself once you have no more available points. My personal lesson learned is to be sure in the future to rent any points that I may want for an express reservation before I automatically credit pool points in the future.

I currently have no points available for June 2015 except credit pooled points from 2016. I do have cancelled points that become available July 1, 2015.

I just initiated a reservation for June 2015, and it indicated that I have points available equal to my credit pooled points only. It gave no indication that I could purchase points to make the reservation.

Thank you. I am convinced that it is likely that I never could rent points in the past unless the reservation exceeded the points I had available. So next year before I credit pool I am going to give some consideration to renting points before hand just so that I can maintain a degree of flexibility in my long range travel planning.

Explorer7, I am not seeing the downside to using your pooled points that you mention. Yes, pooled points have more flexibility than rented points, but this seems to be a trivial distinction.

If you find yourself needing to rent more points on a recurring basis, perhaps you have too few recurring points to begin with (even at 560k VIP Gold)? Renting is not cheap; an additional resale purchase may be cheaper in the long run.

In the big picture its a relatively small limitation based on a misconception on my part. I thought about more points which I certainly could use but DW and I decided to make life work with what we have. I tent to push the limits to maximize my personal use of the membership and discovered a minor limitation that was new to me. I thought I could manage requests from friends and family for travel by simply letting them pay for the rental of extra points as needed but if I have to use all of my points first I'm just going to have to say no if I don't want to be reduced to reservations that I can only make during the 90 day express window once all my allotted points are gone. Sometimes no is a good word that I should probably learn to use more than I do.

Is it possible to make a reservation within the 90 day window renting as many points as needed, then cancel and get them all back as cancelled points? Then you could use the cancelled points to make a reservation farther out, the limitation being that the cancelled points and reservation would both need to be in the current use year (unless you're within 90 days of the next use year). More experienced users can confirm if my initial premise is correct.

I believe that is true and that would indeed make my thoughts of being reduced to travel within a 90 day window an untrue statement on my part. Thanks for opening up more flexibility to me. This forum works!

It is possible to just charge them the replacement (aka rental) rate for all their requests. That way, IF you ever find yourself needing to rent in the future, you'll already have been compensated appropriately. If you never have to rent, then that is bonus for you and this should be behind-the-scenes stuff that they never need to be confused with. It may also be less complicated in practice than the previous suggestion from paxsarah (not that it was a bad suggestion).

Just my 2 cents!

Best of luck in whatever you decide to do.

I just tried to book a transaction during the standard reservation period where all I needed was fewer than 3,000 additional points for the last night of the reservation/ The system told me I couldn't rent or borrow points until I was in the 90 day express reservation window. This doesn't seem to agree with the stated policy. No big deal, since I decided to do something different anyway. But it could have been very frustrating if that was a reservation I really wanted. Anyone else have this happen?

You can only borrow within 90 days during ERP. During SRP outside of 90 days, you can RENT to finish the last night of a reservation.

The website online learning center shows borrowing and renting on the same line ("Using the Website"), but there are two separate URLs.

You are saying you did not even have a rental option?

In that case, I'd talk to a Vacation Guide to sort it out. If it turns out the website should have given you the option, I'd ask the VG for the online rental rate.

Right. It would not even give me a rental option for the 3000 points needed just to complete the last night's stay. It just told me I didn't have enough points to complete the transaction and that both rental and borrowing could only be done in the 90 day window. The use time was during a High week (not Prime).

At this point, I'm not worried about it because I booked something else that didn't need as many points. But I found it odd.

What you are talking about is the ability rent points for your last days stay even outside the 90 day express window. That is possible. But you can't do it on the website. You have to call and talk to a VC. The rule is that you have enough points for your whole stay except part of your last day. If that is true you can call a VC to make the reservation and they can rent you points for $10.00 per 1000 points.

That's silly. It should be enabled online at the $8/1000 point rate. But no one ever said Wyndham made things easy.
