Last Thanksgiving one of our guests brought us a whole spiral smoked ham. We told him we already have plenty of food and to take it home. In the meantime, I placed it outside to stay cool. The next morning the ham was still here so I texted him. He said he didn't want it.

After calling the kids and them not wanting to deal with such a big ham I decided to can it. I used pint jars. We were very busy during the Holidays and had trips planned for NYE so the canned ham just sat in the pantry....... UNTIL..... just now. It really turned out great. Canning the ham reduced the amount of fat in the already lean meat. It taste so good. We aren't pork eaters for the most part but this canned ham is something I would eat.

I thought I might need some recipes but ham sandwich and ham with eggs are plenty.

The term "Canned ham" brought back childhood memories.

Growing up in the Chicago area, the only ham I remember was Agar canned ham:

There was a subplot in "Christmas with the Kranks" about chasing the perfect Hickey Honey Ham:

An interesting useless fact: The B movie actor of 1950's science fiction movies John Agar was the son of the meatpacking family.

We still get a Dubuque Canned Ham once in a while. Sometimes there aren't other choices for hams here on Molokai. Still good just like when I was a kid. 🤙🏻

I went through a jar with some crackers. Its so good. I dont remember what I put in the jars for seasoning. It looks like turkey seasoning maybe.

We were able to get a Kirkland Spiral Ham this year at Misaki's. It was huge but my wife wanted to try it. It was really good. We always make Scalloped Potatoes and Ham with some of the leftovers.

This one was 11 pounds so we had a lot of leftovers. We actually just pulled a package of ot out of our freezer. We mostly used it as an Ice pack to keep other things cool as we drove to the other side of the island. My wife just made a grilled Ham and Cheese sandwich and said it was delicious. I'll have one later. Lol

I think about John Grisham's book, "Skipping Christmas," renamed "Christmas with the Kranks," in the movie. The canned ham is apparently their tradition. The Jamie Lee Curtis's exploits in attempting to acquire the last ham on the shelf is so hilarious.

My favorite thing with ham is ham and cheese quiche but there is no crust. You have to make it in a glass pan or the crusty eggs taste overdone.

We buy ham steaks and have a pineapple sauce with sliced pineapple on top. Used to be a favorite when my kids were younger. Usually had Macaroni and cheese with it. Haven’t had it for years.

Ham steaks had been our go to item for the two of us for years when we have a hankering for ham. I loved buying a Honey Baked when we had more people, but found it pretty reliably gave me a headache. Now our 8 week menu cycle includes one ham dinner. I usually bring that home and then make ham and eggs for breakfast the following weekend. I add the succotash side dish to the scrambled eggs and serve the roasted potatoes on the side.

You get a headache from ham?

We don't eat much pork but I do like Spam and have a few cases rotating in the pantry.
