Does anyone know if Walmart in Cancun accepts American credit cards or do you have to pay in pesos? Also if we take a bus to Walmart to buy groceries, where do you get a cab to take you back to the Royals? Last question, does anyone know if the Royal Islander and Royal Mayan have dvd players or just vcrs? Thanks.

They do accept US credit cards, and taxis can be gotten right outside Walmart. If people handle your bags they will expect a tip.

Yes, you can use American credit cards; we have used our MasterCard there several times. Your credit card company will likely add some kind of surcharge.

I'm not sure how to get a taxi back other than to flag one down on the street - as you leave WalMart, turn left and walk toward the street. At the street, turn left again, and you'll see the bus stop in 20 feet or so. If you want to be able to call or pre-arrange a taxi, ask at the resort, probably at the Sunday AM orientation, or at WalMart's customer service desk, or when you get there on the bus look around for taxis.

Yes, the Royals now have DVD players in the living room, but as of this past summer, not in the bedrooms. You can rent DVDs in the Islander and Mayan business center, but I'd recommend bringing along your favorites.

Hi,
Although Wallmart takes credit card, you may want to check with your credit card company regarding the foreign transaction fee that they may charge you; some could run as high as 3%. If you need some peso, Wallmart is one of the best place for exchange rate; but since they are not a bank, they won't exchange $US to peso unless you buy something. The trick is to give them $50.00 bill and buy a can of Coke.
You can pay cab driver with $US bills, they will give you change in Pesos but their exchange rate is not good.

The taxi's line up for customers right outside the exit of Walmart.

Do you mean you can pay cash in US dollar and get change in peso like we do in Canada? Do they do that everywhere, or just the Walmart? Is the rate better that way than paying with credit cards with the surcharge of 3%?

I HIGHLY suggest not using credit cards in Mexico, except for at the Royal Resorts, and some of the reputable hotels. We learned this lesson the hard way a few years ago when someone used our cc with the number they got from a restautrant we used the card at. They charged about $10,000 USD on it. Luckily, our CC company did not charge us, but it sure changed the way we handle money down there. We pay cash for everything (there are ATMs all over the place) except our final bill at the Royals.

I always use my credit card at Walmart as the exchange rate is much better even with a surcharge. I've never had trouble using my credit cards in Cancun.

Hi Michelle,

I think your unfortunate experience is actually a good reason to carry a credit card. With credit card fraud, you should be limited to at most $50 in liability although just about all cards won't really charge you anything at all.

I would much rather carry around a piece of plastic that with a single phone call (and checking off on the statement which charges are fraudulent) will absolve me from all liability than carry around a few hundred dollars in cash that can be lost or stolen.

However, I would stay away from carrying a debit card. You don't want to carry around a piece of plastic that can empty your checking account if it (or the numbers on it) gets into the wrong hands. But a credit card should be pretty safe.

Does the Cancun Walmart carry most grocery items that are available in the US? My kids are very picky and one of them would rather starve than try something he doesn't like. (Yes, he knows what he likes/hates before he tries it.)

Thanks

Many, if not most. They carry many of the same major brands - Campbell's, Heinz, Kelloggs, and so forth. The packaging will be somewhat different but recognizable. You'll see similar cereals, soups, sodas, cheese, yogurt, and snack foods.

Thanks! I feel a lot better now. I can add Cancun to my wish list for our next family vacation.

Is the Cancun Walmart open on Sunday?

Yes, Walmart is open on Sunday. Sundays tend to be quite crowded with local shoppers who have the day off. I try to go on a different day than Sunday.

I've always used Capital One Visa at Wal-Mart in Cancun. They never charge an extra fee. I only had a problem once. Capital One thought someone else was using my card and wouldn't approve my charge. Now I always call the credit card company before I leave for vacation and let them know where I will be.

Does anyone here know where the other 2 WalMarts in Cancun are? It is often a question at the parties at the Royal Resorts, giving you a free t-shirt.

Other two? I think there is only one and haven't run into that question at the Royals. Maybe one is Walmart.com online? Could they be thinking of Sam's Club?

They were pretty specific about there being three. I just looked at the website for WalMart in Mexico and only 2 are listed. The second one is far out. There is one listed as being in Nichupte. Don't think it is Cancun, but might be, as that is the name of the big lagoon. It may be down from downtown towards the airport. Jim in Cancun, where are you to help me???

The 3 Wal Marts in Cancun are
1. Avenue Coba (this is the one most tourists go to)

2. On Mayapan in the Industrial zone (I've no idea where that is)

3. In the La Gran Plaza shopping center on Manzana (I believe its by the downtown ferry at Benito Juarez.

Hope this helps
