We're headed back to the Sands. We've been there 5 years, but I'm sure we have not scratched the surface on restaurants. What are your favorite ones?
 
You didn't mention cuisine, so I'll assume Mexican ;)

* El Timon d Calin
* HC Monterrey
* El Tigre y Toro
* Altamar
* El Cejas

Plenty of lunch spots in Mercado 23
 
La Dolce Vita (downtown, on the bus route)
JC Capitan
Surfin' Burrito
 
The tourist spots seem to be popular with folks here.

It's all a matter of opinion, of course.

Personally, when we travel this far, we enjoy participating in the culture with each opportunity and getting way from all the tourists. There's enough of them back at the resort ;) That's why we travel to Mexico and not south Florida. We enjoy being the only non-locals in the restaurants we visit.

But again, to each their own.

I would suggest at least trying one non-touristy place to eat while on vacation. By non-touristy, I mean no English menu, and your being the only non-Mexican in the entire establishment. Yes, you need to leave the HZ and the tourists strips downtown to get to one.
 
If u wanna try something non-swanky, try El Fish Fritanga..Actually, close to Sands...Across the street from police station...(bayside)....KM 12
Believe me, nothing fancy; but great food....

ps...U can walk to it from Sands

I will second this. You can also walk to Fish Fritanga from the Westin Lagunamar. (When last there, we used a a coupon for 2 free drinks that was given to us by the concierge at Lagunamar...so check with your concierge before going.)
 
We like La Distilleria not too far from La Isla. Great food and huge margaritas!!!

This is my wife's fave...Across from Presidente Resort / Hotel...Bayside...Little dinky place; but pretty cool..Located within small hotel..(can't remember name)

It is the Imperial Laguna Hotel.

Recent reviews for Palapa Belga have not been great, I'll have to see how it is holding up in March.
 
We haven't eaten at that many restaurants in Cancun, but Puerto Madero is one of the best restaurants we have eaten at anywhere, and we travel a lot. It is a wonderful Argentinian steakhouse, although not inexpensive. However, I can't imagine going back to Cancun and not eating there again. We loved it. (They are related to the PM Fish & Steakhouse in Miami. The Puerto Madero restaurant in Miami is unrelated.) The octopus is an amazingly delicious dish, not to be missed.

We never were at JC Capitan, but enjoyed Navio's very much. Also, another vote for Du Mexique, Sasi Thai, El Fish Fritanga, Los Almendros, lunch spots in Mercado 23.

We just returned last week and had nice dinners at the following:

* Fred's Place
- 10 min by bus, 20 min walk, from RS across from JW Marriott

* El Fish Fritanga
- went twice!

* Hacienda Sisal
- at the RS

* Captain's Cove
- across from Royal Islander via free shuttle from RS

* Santos Mariscos Tacos
- Fresh, delicious and affordable tacos right next to El Fish Fritanga (ie 10 min walk from RS)

On past visits have been impressed by:

* Harry's

* Crab House

* Puerto Madero

* John Grey's Place

* La Habichuela Sunset
- Close to RS but quality diminishing yearly, less good than downtown but beatiful location

* La Distilleria
- acceptable but nowhere near its former glory (good margarits though!)

* Cenacolo Mare
- same owners as the spot in Plaza Kukulkan, but focus on seafood and Italian woodfired pizza etc with nice decor and piano music (basically across the street from RS!)

ALL of the above are either within a 20 min walk or 10 min bus ride of the RS
