Please help. I have received conflicting responses from Expedia.
I booked flights only on Expedia and looked for specific reference to the Mexico Departure Tax. Failing to see in on my documentation, I called Expedia direct and was initially informed the tax was covered. Then I was asked to go on HOLD and upon the attendant's return was informed it is not covered and must be paid at the airport in CASH $40.
I am not concerned for myself but my daughter, who leaves this Sunday, my son who leaves the following Saturday, both of whom are on limited budgets. Any help would be appreciated.

For Canadian and US residents it is included in your ticket price. You should see a line item on your tickets indicating it.

When we were there last month, I was expecting to pay the charge, but never did. Must have been part of the $72 in fees for each frequent flyer ticklet.

Expedia Itinerary makes no reference

I received the Expedia Itinerary and it makes no reference to a Departure Tax. It indicates I will not receive a paper ticket but just require the itinerary at the airport. I have sent an email to Expedia asking for clarification. I hope you are right.:wall:

have you tried calling the airline directly and asking if it's paid for with your ticket. They will know, since it is the airline, not expedia that is charging it.

biafrate - I noticed that you also are from Canada. Just curious, what was the airfare to go to Mexico and where were you going? I was looking into flying from here (Wpg) to Cancun and it's approx. $900-$1,000 per person.

We were in Cancun in December. We did not pay a departure tax or any payment upon leaving. Seems several years ago when we were there, we did pay a tax at the airport on departure.

I purchased three tickets on Expedia.ca flying out of Buffalo and into Cancun with one stop in Philadelphia. Each ticket cost $656.00 for a total of $1968.
The next line item was for "Taxes and Fees" of $351.60 and Booking Fee $21.
My total charge to my card was for $2,340.60 CDN.
No where on the documentation does it explain what the "Taxes and Fees" are. I was just in Cabo last November and had to pay a Departure Tax at the airport. I was wondering if this was the same. My Cabo trip was also purchased with Expedia.ca and yet I still had to pay the Dep Tax.
I have since emailed Expedia but have not heard back yet.

Winterpeg;

I bought my tickets from Air Canada early. They listed them at 700$ last summer, the price went down to 600 late in the summer then back up to 1000. Now, if you check their web fares, they're back down to 710 from Toronto or Montreal. Add the govt overhead and other excuses and you're at 826.00

Not bad for direct flight and out of Canada.

Just heard back from Expedia

Well I just received a reply from Expedia.ca
"The ticket price does not include a departure fee from Mexico".
This was highlighted on my reply so be forewarned.

I do recall paying a departure fee in Cabo San Lucas last December and that trip was also booked with Expedia.ca flying out of Buffalo, NY.

Spirit airlines includes a departure tax in their charges. It is listed.

I've flown to and from Mexico many times and have never paid the departure tax they talk about. (unless it is included in the fare) The only place I've had to come up with extra cash was in Vancouver Canada. ($10)

Come to think of it!!!!!

I have travelled to Mexico at least four times in the last three years, and only paid the departure tax in Cabo San Lucas last year. I do not recall paying any such tax when I flew out of Acapulco. I am asking only because I saw it referenced on a Cancun web site where it indicated the Departure tax.

Hopefully this is not enforced.

It never seems to be clear whether the departure tax is included or not. I've had trips where they said it was and trips where they said it wasn't. I always make sure I have enough cash to cover it when I leave, but I've never been charged for it when departing Cancun.

Thanks for the advice

Thanks Tony. I have suggested to my son and his buddies to put $40US away in their wallets just in case. The last thing they need and I need, is a problem getting back home.
