Cancun airport question

We will be spending a couple of weeks in Cancun - the first at the Royal Sands and the second at the Hard Rock Riviera Maya. For the first week, we are staying with friends at the Sands who will require our help to get to the Cancun airport (handicapped with wheelchairs) and then our transportation to the HRRM will pick us up at the airport, same terminal.

Are we able to just walk back out of the terminal after assisting our friends to check in, and then walk to the pick-up area? Or do we have to go through the building in some way? We've been to this airport a number of times but never had to do this before. Any info appreciated, I haven't been able to figure it out by looking at the map online.

You may go in and out of the Departure terminal without a problem to assist your friends. However there is no direct access to the arrivals area. The terminals do not connect. Furthermore, they have erected a new fence around the arrivals exit, so that no one except employees, bus drivers, van drivers can enter. You are prevented from going into the area where the HRRM is parked. So you will have to make arrangements with them to pick you up where the vans exit the "forbidden" zone, or across the street near the car rentals.

Yikes - I was afraid of something like that. Maybe I can tip our van driver to stick around while we assist our friends and then he can drive us into the pick-up area.

There are hundreds of taxis and vans dropping off people at departures. With any luck you may spot the Hard Rock van. Or, ask a taxi driver. They are not supposed to pick up anyone at the airport, but, they do, especially for a good fare all the way to the Hard Rock. Or, if you seek adventure, simply take the ADO airport bus to Playa deal Carmen, then take a taxi from the bus station to the Hard Rock.

I'm going to have an 83-year-old with me, and I don't think she'd quite be up to the adventure. Our HRRM transportation is included with our payment. I hope we can figure it out when we are there!

Quick update - this turned out to be no problem at all. We were able to simply walk from the front of the departure area into the arrivals area. A number of people were doing the same thing. There was a fence with two guards who looked at our transportation confirmation from Hard Rock and waved us right through. Then another couple dozen feet away you had to walk into the area that is the very end of the arrivals corridor from inside the airport - another guard was there who glanced at our paper and waved us through. Easy peasy!

Glad to read this. I'm in the same situation next month - needing to escort someone to the airport then catch my Palace transfer for my second week
