Cancellation Question

I have a reservation booked for a check in this Thursday (SO reservation). Our dog ended up getting surgery. He should be fine, but we may need to cancel the reservation to stay home and monitor him. How much ahead of time do I need to make the cancellation so that I'll get the SOs back (restricted, of course). Does it need to be at least 24 hours before check it?
 
I believe the deadline is midnight ET the day before check-in. But I would do it earlier to be safe.

By midnight, I mean that if the check-in is on the 14th, you need to cancel before the start of the 14th at midnight Eastern Time, regardless of where the resort is located.
