Can you shorten your reservation without penalty (if done early enough)?

I've recently learned how to walk reservations, so I know you get points refunded without penalty if switching from a weekend reservation to a weekday one, but that's dealing with the same number of days on a reservation. What if you switch from a 7 night reservation to say, a 3 or 4 night? Do you still get the points back with no fee? Hoping for a split stay between an HGVC resort and Disney, and I can make HGVC reservations at 9 months and DVC at 7 months, so if I was dropping any HGVC days it would be 7 months in advance.

As long as you are 61 days or more out from the reservation, you can change as much as you like. Within 61 days, you can cancel and rebook.

I thought you lost points for doing this if you were within 30 days and had not purchased insurance.

Correct if you are within 30 days. So, I should have said between 30 and 61 days then you would cancel and rebook. Outside 61 days, freely changeable.

If you have the insurance you can cancel and rebook, but will need to pay a new reservation fee, and insurance if you decide you want that so close in... so you get the points back, but at a cost...

I had called (regarding MVC- at Ritz) and inquired about changing a reservation last year- was told only option- cancel and rebook; however risk it being snapped up. We chose to keep it as was (let it sit empty 1 day) rather then risk it disappearing since no availability. If you see other villas available then its an easy choice-cancel /rebook, however if none are available like it was with us could be a risk involved.

You can ask CS to do it. There is still a very small risk in those situations but it could happen and you lose it.

Well, what's supposed to happen (and it does sometimes) is that the Change Reservation option pulls up the inventory you actually have booked, even if there is nothing else available. In this case, reducing the umber of days should pose no risk as your held inventory is still yours.

Cheers.

You wouldn't lose it if you modify it. The risk that I was referring to is cancelling it and rebooking if you are within the 61 days and after 30.

I have actually cancelled and rebook many times (probably around 50) and only have had an issue one time. My normal method to cancel and rebook is to have the CS do it since it is very unlikely that someone will book the reservation in the few seconds that it is available (as apposed to 5-15 minutes if I did it). The one time that I did lose the reservations is when there was negative inventory placed on that week because it was somehow overbooked.

So, like some has stated, there is a risk. I certainly don't like doing this when I have already made hard plans (booked flights, invited guests, etc.).
