Can you fix your week and unit?

Just wondering if you can specify a particular unit too if buying from Mariott. Thanks. Katherine

We only own at Waiohai, so that's the only place I have a definitive answer for, and the answer is no. You purchase either an ocean view or an island view (all the units are the same size and there's no lockoff), and there is a number noted in our deed, but over the years we've been placed in different buildings every time we've stayed.

You can request a particular unit number 30 days in advance of your reservation, though. We've had some luck with this.

Marriott no longer sells inventory as weeks. They moved to a points-based system on 6/20/10.

Not strictly correct - you can buy weeks at various resorts outside Continental USA.

I think weeks are still being sold at the Caribbean properties for the next year or so, until they can wade through the legal work necessary to include them in the trust program. I know in Aruba they are selling both weeks and points, and are close to sell-out of Platinum weeks (they claim to have 20 left).

Katherine, if you mean can a Marriott buyer do the same thing as a Starwood buyer (ie. pay a premium to fix a week/unit) the answer is no.

Marriott has selectively sold fixed unit/weeks. For example, ocean front at Lahaina/Napili Villas. But, they were sold as such.

At one time I owned a fixed week at Monarch on HHI. I sold it a while back but have to believe it is still a fixed week.

There are older Marriott properties that were sold as fixed weeks, and fixed units, like Monarch. If you were to look at buying a resale week at Monarch, you could look for a specific week and unit. It might take a while before you would find exactly what you wanted.
There were holiday weeks sold at a premium with select views, like ocean front, but not a certain unit. You can always request certain units based on your check-in day.
You could call Marriott and find out exactly which older properties were sold that way.
All of the newer Marriott properties were sold as a float week in a set season as stated earlier.

I forgot about the darn point system. So how are they managing the view preferences for point owners?

For example, when we were checking in at NCV this weekend, some guy checking in next to me was saying he wanted an OV unit because he was "an owner" and he had view priority. The lady said, "you are right, let's put you in building XYZ." So does that mean he is a week owner (previous to June 2010) or that if you own points you still have a "home resort?"

We LOVED NCV by the way. But I would only want to go if somehow we could guarantee and OV. Sounds like that is not really possible anymore.

Katherine

Weeks owners still get the view they own, so if you buy OV the view is guaranteed.

Points owners can choose their view (based on availability) with better views costing more points.

There is a chart showing the points needed for different weeks/views in the sticky for the DC at the top of the page.

I know your experience is mostly with Starwood. Marriott's points system is very different. Different weeks and views have different point values at the same resort.

St. Kitts is selling deeded weeks not DC points. They are not yet approved to sell the DC program at this time.
