we have a wednesday check-in. i'm guessing that's not as common at this resort? or do owners (or trust owners) book nights, not weeks?

any suggestions for room requests? it's our first visit.

any must have restaurants, activities, things to avoid in the area?

You will probably be near one of the small pools; family pool or adult pool. I think the rooms that view the main pool are considered OV.

Definitely walk across the street to Penca and try the shrimp tacos or pasta. You can also walk to Los Tacos Locos, live music on Tuesday and Friday... Great tacos and ice cream... The elote is good but so are the others. The pineapple is really good plus good flan. Definitely do the art walk on Thursday night and have dinner down there

You can take an uber to La Comer for groceries...stock up on big jugs of water. The water in the rooms is not purified and the management will advise you to drink bottled water and get ice from the ice machines. Water and ice are purified in the bar/restaurants though

When are you going? Are you going to have a vehicle? In May it is not uncommon for the temperature to be over 100°F. Your Reservation Confirmation should say what view type you have. If it is a Pool View we prefer Rooms that overlook the Serenity Pools. Room assignments are made based on Ownership and time of day you check in. Thursday Nights is the Art Walk in Downtown San Jose del Cabo. About a mile walk. The more common Art/Crafts are in the Plaza. The higher quality Art Galleries are on Alvaro Obregon. The large Grocery Stores are about a mile walk. Go out the Resort and turn left. At the traffic circle turn right. We prefer La Comer. The locals still call it "Mega." On the Ocean side of Mega is a local Taco Restaurant - Claro Fish, Jr. There is also a Claro Fish, Jr on the walk to downtown San Jose del Cabo. We had several nice breakfasts across the street from the Resort. If you Book any activities they will pick you up and the Resort and return you to the Resort. Walmart is the best place to buy tequila. In all our years (20+) of going to Cabo we have never gotten sick or upset stomachs from drinking water at the Resorts. In the Restaurants we drink Aqua del Casa. The water of the House.

We didn't use it but assume that they are filtered since they advised us to use them. The fridge in our room had a water and ice dispenser with an in-fridge filter so I was hoping that we could use it but when I asked, they said no. They advised us to use bottled water and the ice machines.

We are well versed in mouth closed shower locations so no big deal. That is how I divide the world... Mouth open/mouth closed showers...:)

We also used bottled water for brushing our teeth. That and ice are often the gotchas for folks who travel to places with risky water.

They are an in-between location for me. I bent my travel rules and was fine but it is always a roll of the dice. Only takes one drop of water and food is only as safe as the person with the least clean hands that touched it.

In riskier places, I only use bottled water and bottled drinks that they open in front of me, no ice, mouth closed in the shower, brush my teeth with bottled water, only eat fruit that I peel, no salads, and only hot food.

That is the problem with my line of work..... You know the dangers ...

You are lucky because the water in the room is coming straight from the pipe from the city. CA doesn't filter it and why the management advises not to drink it. I have heard from plenty of others who haven't been as lucky there. For me, the big jugs at La Comer are cheap and don't want to risk a GI issue on vacation.

I made the mistake of street tamales in Tijuana once.... After we had been having a few drinks and I let my guard down....ugh.... Painful flight back to ATL the next day.

Another time, I was in Afghanistan and basically living on kabob and naan when some of my Afghani colleagues brought, what looking like pica de gallo, looked so good ... So had some and it was very good but that night and the next day was not good.... Broke my rule ...ugh....

Btw, not this last trip but the one before, I talked to management about the water. They are the ones that told me about the rooms versus the restaurants. I then suggested that they put a note in the rooms, maybe on the fridge, telling people about the water but, when we returned this year, no note... So they ignored that suggestion. Not really sure why they wouldn't want to protect their guests but it is what it is

i see now we have a view of the serenity pool. we'll check-in likely before official availability time. we don't own there, but if you mean level, we are the lowest level possible - before levels even start :).

Have an awesome trip!
Rarely do they give us legit elite upgrades; usually it is 'we are sold out', 'full', 'sorry', 'no upgrade'. Only GOATs like @JohnnyO & @HuskerATL get the upgrades, even on the Elite circuit!

Per the Washington Post, the secret weapon is Pepto Bismol 4 times a day for a 65% reduction in travelers diarrhea. https://www.washingtonpost.com/wellness/2026/03/30/how-to-prevent-travelers-diarrhea/

Bismuth subsalicylate has been around for over a century. The “pink stuff” has a genuinely solid track record of benefit in multiple randomized controlled trials: classic studies testing two tablets four times daily in U.S. students traveling to Mexico showed it confers 65 percent protection against traveler’s diarrhea. The bismuth component provides antibacterial and antiviral effects, and unlike antibiotics, it does not contribute to antimicrobial resistance or disrupt your gut microniome.

There is a catch here: for it to work, the drug must be present at the exact time the pathogen arrives in your small bowel. Because the small bowel moves fast, that means you need to take four doses a day (two tablets per dose every 3-4 hours while awake, and no more than eight tablets in a 24-hour period).

I've never had any issues (and I don't have an iron stomach by any means) but I do stick to bottled water - just in case. I will be adding the pink stuff too.

Easy now, that stuff comes with its own side effects.

There is no doubt that Pepto can work but I would be hesitant to use it as a prophylaxis. I do have a bottle of Cipro in back pack that travels with me plus an assortment of other drugs that are there if needed.

I tend to have an iron stomach but still follow my rules. Between Peace Corps, military, my global CDC work, and personal travel, I have lived/stayed in areas where there wasn't a lot of choice for water or food so you prepare as much as you can.... And try to follow rules.

Santo Pulpo across the street and down a block to the left has great seafood and several large tvs on the second floor. Would be where I would go for the basketball games if I were staying there this week.

Behind La Comer is Lateral Crudo y Asado, a great taco place. The cheek and tongue tacos are quite good. Claro Fish jr is another great taco place.

La Mexicana across the street and down a few store fronts to the left is our go to place there for breakfast. Still haven’t done lunch or dinner there but they get decent reviews.

Next time you are there, try Pencas. It is down by Santo Pulpo. We really liked their shrimp tacos. The pasta was really good and our son liked their burgers.

Plus, one of the door men, Edgar, who works there and at Agave in the plaza area, just moved back there from the same area in ATL as us. Both daughters went to Emory... Very nice guy who will hook you up. Tell him Carl from ATL sent you ...

We’ll try it out. Think we’ve been to Agave. We’re down there quite a bit staying at Flora more often than Cabo Azul, so get to the restaurants near the plaza more. Really like Carnitas Jalisco near the municipal market on Coronado & Santos Degollado, but that’s a hike from Cabo Azul and probably not something for a first trip there.

By Claro, there is Los Tacos Locos in that little strip of stores across the street. We really liked it. Really good tacos and ice cream....and good prices

If you’re really nice, I might tell you where to find the one-legged man who sells fresh squeezed orange juice and smoked marlin at a stand on the road. Fabulous for making your own tacos (the marlin, not the OJ).

That would be great info. Haven't had marlin since the Philippines... Even though you need to limit too much because of mercury levels. It is a tasty fish though.

A friend couple went with us on the trip that we just came back from and the guy likes to fish so he went out with a guide and caught a nice snapper and mackerel. He arranged for the Spicy Tuna to prepare them and, wow, very good. He took them over there a couple hours before we were scheduled to go there and then they made many dishes, most raw, and we ate for an hour straight as they brought dish after dish to our table. Charged us about $30/person but the food was amazing....we were stuffed...

You can find him by the OXXO in Puerto Los Cabos, on the right of the store towards the Hotel El Ganzo. He typically has orange juice and cane juice, and often has smoked marlin and smoked tuna. Great friendly guy who speaks no English so we get to practice our meager Spanish.

We generally go fishing out of the port there and have pretty good luck with yellowtail tuna. We try to go the first weekend of a two week stay and get enough to last us.

The Spicy Tuna chef came out to talk to us and commented that they, typically, use tuna instead of what we brought but it was still very good. That is an option for you if you take a tuna to them. It was a great meal with just dish after dish, if you like they style of food.
