Did anyone see the UFO over CA tonight? The Navy claims it was their missle shot from a submarine off the coast of southern CA but it was seen as far away as NV and AZ, [and Utah.] We saw it while driving to dinner in central CA. Weird

I didn't, but I'm nowhere near there. Hope to see something on TV about it.

When I lived in San Diego in the 1980s we were camping high in the mountains east of the city. We were stargazing one night, and saw what we decided must have been a missile launch from a ship out in the ocean far to the west of us. When the rocket separated, it seemed even more like a missile launch. It was kind of eerie. I wonder if what you saw is anything like that?

A ton of people on my Facebook feed (friends of mine in Vegas) saw it. I happen to be at the Grand Canyon now and did not see it.

This is not my picture, but it's similar to what we saw. The really distinctive thing about it was the very bright tail. We thought it was a helicopter with a search light on:

*Since this was seen over 4 states, I'm guessing that there may have been more than one missile?

Testing is going on for the next 6 nights, so I will be ready next time:

My son was in Oceanside at the time and said it included one very bright flash.

The tail is illuminated by sunlight because this happened very shortly after sunset on the coast, meaning that the sun had not "set" yet at high altitude, and the launch location was considerably to the west of the coast.

My Doug was on 3 "boomers" (SSBNs) during his 38 US Naval career. He saw Polaris and Trident launches.

He immediately recognized the video shot.

When we turned on the news this a.m., he immediately recognized it and said, " sub missile launch".

Can you please ask him how it could be clearly seen in 4 states, and where these things come down? Were their multiple rockets launched?

I am explaining, in my own words, what Doug said, so please folks, don't pick this apart. Doug is a retired US Navy officer, served 38 years on boomers and warships. He was on 10 patrols; a couple were back-to-back (88 days x 2 underwater - think about that). I met him when he was a young navigator.

He said that it was pre-targeted to land in the ocean, in a triangulated area , probably a quarter of a mile area wide in the ocean.

The missile is launched on a three stage rocket (2-3 explosions) and the trajectory is not straight up (unlike a land based rocket launch) but in a climbing/curving trajectory so it traveled along at on a west-east path which could be seen for an extended time.

According to the public USS Kentucky report, there was only one missile.

Think of how bright the night shuttle launches in Florida were, but instead of going straight up, it went along a climbing arching liketrajectory path.

So, these are my words on how it was explained to me. I think I have explained it without totally muddling the info.

So it was launched out in the Pacific, it headed inland, and then back to the Pacific? How far inland do they go?

It's just astounding, that it could be seen in 4 states, hundreds of miles away, out over the ocean!

Not so much. Flying up and down the coast at ~30,000 from the airplane window I can easily see across then entire width of California and will into Arizona or Nevada.

This missile is likely at 60,000 feet - maybe higher - so would be visible over a greater area. And given the curvature of the earth, the transect of the surface that would be able to see increases faster with height. - i.e., doubling the height above the earths surface will more than double the portion of the earth's surface from which the object might be visible.

I understand what you are saying, but apparently this one was more visible than usual, because it was launched about 30 min. after sun down, and got up high enough that the vapor trail reflected the sun, so it was very big and bright against the night sky.

It's also very dry out right now with a mild Santa Ana condition which makes it easier to see.

There will be testing for a few more days so hopefully we will see another.
