Frequently Asked Questions

What is the purpose of creating this portal?
As businesses recover from the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s even more important to shop and support local whenever you can.

When you buy from Hawaii companies, your purchase goes toward sustaining our local economy and helping small business owners survive.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused Hawaii businesses to rely even more on e-commerce platforms to engage with and sell to their consumers. Buy Hawaii, Give Aloha is a free online resource that promotes Hawaii businesses and Hawaii-made products. Created by the Hawaii Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism, our site directory lists local retailers, restaurants, farmers and manufacturers all in one place, so shoppers in Hawaii, on the Mainland and overseas know exactly where to look to find products that are made in Hawaii.

What is the meaning behind the “Buy Hawaii, Give Aloha” brand/tag line?
“Buy Hawaii” means to purchase authentic, made in Hawaii products. “Give Aloha” means several things, for example:
  • When you purchase something made in Hawaii, you are giving aloha to the business owner by supporting their local business and employees;
  • You are supporting the local economy and community when you make the effort to buy Hawaii made products;
  • When you gift something made in Hawaii, you are sharing a special item and your aloha with the receiver of your gift.
What is the process used to select companies that are on the portal?
The Buy Hawaii, Give Aloha portal site is open to all manufacturers and marketplaces of Made in Hawaii products with online shopping; restaurants and farm delivery companies are also welcome to register.

However, only products that meet the requirements to be labeled Made in Hawaii set forth in §486-119, Hawaii Revised Statutes (HRS), may be posted on the BHGA portal site. Companies listing on the Buy Hawaii, Give Aloha portal site should have at least 75% of their total product offering being made in Hawaii, as defined by §486-119, HRS.
Why does the portal only feature Hawaii product manufacturers?
Hawaii-based vendors and manufacturers help to sustain our local economy by creating more jobs for local residents. Many shoppers here and overseas understand this and want to purchase authentic Hawaii-made products

What should I do if I'm having difficulty buying online?
Our portal site only provides links to these businesses and does not handle any transactions. Please contact customer service at the individual company.

It's not on the list, but I buy banana bread and lilikoi jam from Hana Farms every few months: https://www.hanafarms.com/
Thanks for sharing. I’m going to try them.:)

There are some companies I’ve ordered from that are not on the list too. I‘ve used them for special occasions.

Honolulu Cookie Company - https://www.honolulucookie.com/

Big Island Candies - https://www.bigislandcandies.com/
I like their
- chocolate-covered whole Hawaiian macadamia nuts
- chocolate macadamia nut crunch
- lemon brownies and golden macadamia nut brownies
Last year, I added pineapple manju to my Xmas order since she loves pineapple and my sister-in-law loved them so I have to try them for myself this year.

For tropical flower arrangements:
-
Hawaiian Greenhouse - https://hawaiiangreenhouse.com/ (They were Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden‘s supplier for flowers ordered from their website)
- Akatsuka Orchid Gardens - http://www.akatsukaorchid.com/

Thanks for sharing. I use

Macnutfarm.com

Great place for macadamia nut goodies.

Thanks, I just ordered their flavored macadamia nuts (Honey roasted, Kona Coffee and Caramel) :)

thanks for the lists and reminders. I love the Honolulu Cookie Company cookies. I am planning to order some of those and the Mac Nuts this weekend!

In the past I've ordered 100% Kona coffee from several of the farms on the Big Island. I may need to start doing that again.

Also the store at Pacific Whale Foundation is available for online ordering. They have a Made in Hawaii section of products.

If you love Kona Coffee. I’ve been to this little farm in Captain Cook Hawaii. They are in the best of the best area. Been ordering for years.

Another good one is

Good quality but IMO not quite as good as Kona. If you are ever near Hanapepe Hawaii, check out their little coffee sampling store and free tour. The farm overlooks the Ocean so great views.

Molokai actually has some really good coffee too. I usually buy it while I am there but I have ordered it from Coffees of Hawaii, link below.

My favorite is the Muleskinner. Maybe worth a try if you like the others or if you want to try something different.

I'm pretty sure I tried it when we were there and probably brought some to bring home.

Just a heads up...It's an unsecure connection.

I really enjoy a good strong cup of DECAF coffee. Does anyone here have any particular Hawaii Coffee Company where I can buy (and grind) my beans off of the recommended list from the first posting ?

I usually buy my beans from Starbucks but would like to try giving Hawaii some of my business during these difficult economic times that Hawaii is experiencing.......

Here’s a place to try.

You call them and ask about their decaf and they will give you advice on the best fit. In all honesty, I have not used their shipping services BUT have gone to their coffee shop in Captain Cook, HI and their coffee is superb. They are small but really, really good coffee.

Just a FYI... Coffees of Hawaii is available at Whole Foods on Oahu. I’ll have to remember to try it during my next visit to Oahu.

Mahalo, we are actually getting ready to go shopping now.

Now that we are here, we are going to Molokai enough to keep us stocked. I drink more coffee at work when I’m on Oahu. I make coffee every morning while on Molokai

We like the Coffee from Maui Grown Coffee Company Store. We like the Dark Star Maui Mokka but it is not Decaf. They do offer some Decaf options. I believe all of their selections are 100% Mau'i grown.

We also like a lot of the offerings from Kauai Coffee Company. Their Coffee is 100% Kaua'i grown.

With both of these you can order over the Internet.

A negative about "Kona" Coffee is that it only has to be 10% BI grown to be called Kona Coffee.
