A few months ago, my daughter complained of a severe headache for about 2 minutes, then threw up a Burger King burger she had just eaten, and then the headache was gone. We figured she must have had food poisoning, but kept her home from school the next day because there was a bug going around.

Fast forward a month, and the same exact thing happened - sever headache for 2 minutes, then vomitting the Burger King burger, and then the headache was gone (we didn't keep her home from school the next day.)

Needless to say, she will not be eating Burger King burgers any time soon! It doesn't happen with other burgers.

Has anyone else heard of anything similar to this?

Maybe, you should have taken the burger to a lab to see what was in it that maybe made her sick.?

The ingredients list is posted on the nutritional charts which each BK have on display. They do use an artificial charcoal grill taste additive, wouldn't be surprised if it was that.

After the first episode, we didn't do anything because a few of her friends had a bug that was causing vomitting for a day or two. Her sister had also eaten a burger the same day, so although it could have been food poisoning, it seemed odd that she was the only one affected. It was only after the second episode that we thought it must have been a reaction to the burger because the exact same thing happened.

Charcoal grill flavor additive - that's curious! The problem has never happened with any other food.

Maybe she has developed an allergy? Who knows what is in anything we eat any more with so many pollutants and who knows what creeping into our food at any stage of production from farm to factory to shelf to home.

Could be something in the burger triggered a migraine attack--the headache and vomiting are classic symptoms. That happens to my husband if he gets a whiff of certain fragrances. There is such a thing as pediatric migraine. Guess you'll be avoiding BK!!

Is MSG on their list of ingredients? It can cause similar symptoms, particularly the headaches . . . which if severe enough can produce vomitting regardless of what is in your tummy.

I have big problems with the stuff (MSG) and avoid it at all costs!

SOunds very much like an allergy or migraines. My MIL can't eat anything with MSG, or get a migraine very quickly. If your daughter hasn't had one before, she probablly doesn't know what one feels like, but that's what it sounds like to me - DH calls some of his migraines "sick headaches" because that's what they do - make him sick.

The simple solution is to stay away from their burgers - obviously her body is reacting to something in them. If she has a similar reaction to any other foods, then see if you can identify what they have in common. But I wouldn't go out of my way to give her something with MSG.

med for migraine

Just a good place to insert this: found a fairly new medicine for migraines. Has been out about 2 years. Called Relpax...it aborts a migraine within first hour, 2 at most. Has been 100% effective for me...now 3 months with no "real" migraines, and i used to have one start once a day......now they start (less frequently), but are gone with no progression to the "pain" level at all...matter of fact, I only notice the very mild prodromal non-painful "feeling" for a short 30 min. But NO pain. It's miraculous...had 'em for 25 years. Ask your physician. me

I did also wonder if it was a "pediatric" migraine. My neice gets those. The way she complained about her head pain, it seemed like a migraine. But as soon as she threw up, the headache was gone. I didn't think that happened with pediatric migraines. Regardless, we don't get BK burgers any more. (Chicken nuggets seem okay, though.)

Something similar

My first grade son has gone through the same thing this year 3 times since last fall. Fortunately, he has been home each time. He gets what seems to be an awful headache and wants to take tylenol and lie down. Within about 25 minutes he throws up, then he normally takes a nap and by later that evening/next morning you never know anything happened. He NEVER runs a fever. His pediatrician has suggested both a migraine and allergies (my son has a lot of seasonal allergies, allergies to cats and bee stings that can at times cause and asthmatic reaction. I am supposed to keep track of things and look for patterns, but all they seem to have in common so far is the time of day and the symptoms. We go to the doctor for his yearly check-up in a few weeks and are hoping to know more then!

Good luck. We do know it has only happened with Burger King burgers, and it's easy enough to just avoid them.

Do the buns have sesame seeds?

My friend is severely allergic to sesame seeds. Death allergic. When she was a child, they did not know what was causing the reactions. Now that she is an adult and has identified the sesame seeds, if she eats just one, her throat closes, mouth itches, and she cannot breathe. She must go to the hospital immediately, and now she has a allergy pin to inject herself in case of emergencies.

Of course, this might not apply to Burger king, I don't know.

Why? Don't you think every fast food place uses preservatives and other unhealthy products in their food. It may not be MSG. Maybe it's the chemical that keeps the lettuce from wilting, or maybe it's the chemical that keeps the fries from turning brown.

You know ther're in there.

i cannot believe for a minute that BK (or any other FF places) uses MSG;

This is interesting to me because EVERY time my husband has had a burger from Burger King, we have to rush home immediately...he loses everything, but out the "other end"..(man, he'd kill me if he knew I was sharing that!) :p Of course we no longer eat there.
Interesting..I will have to tell him about your daughter's experience.

I hope they are never at Burger King at the same time! :D

My husband always had similar experiences with Mcdonalds. Also occasioanlly with very greasy home-cooked meals. turns out that he has Crohn's disease. No other symptoms, just bad reaction to very greasy foods.:(

i cannot believe for a minute that BK (or any other FF places) uses MSG; there are too many people out there that have problems with it. however, i can believe that they have onions or traces of onions in their burgers; these can be triggers for migrane in some people. ---ken

I'm not sure why you don't believe it...BK does indeed use MSG in its foods. Instead of labeling it MSG, they label it "Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein"- the same thing. http://sci-toys.com/ingredients/msg.html

It would probably help if people stopped referring to what BK serves as "food". When I was a kid we used to always say that we never felt full after eating at McDonalds we just felt different.

Very accurate observation!
