My sister and her DD were bumped off of an Alaska air flight and given travel coupons to use within the next year. She has decided to use them for Hawaii. What is the process to book travel using these travel coupons (is that what they are called?). Thanks.

I have been bumped while flying with Alaska several times. In fact, I was bumped in July while returning from Kauai. The tickets that Alaska gives you are called Bonus Travel Tickets. I have already booked a flight to Maui for June of 2009 using a BTT. Here is what you need to do/know:

1) Call Alaska general reservations at 800-252-7522 to make the reservation.
2) You will have to book your flight to/from Hawaii far in advance or there will not be availability. Alaska has a very limited number of BTT seats available for each flight. Today they are booking out to July 27, 2009. Within days, the July 27, 2009 seat availability will be history.
3) The BTT's are very flexible. You can book and cancel flights over and over again without any charge whatsoever.
4) You will have to pay any applicable tax. There is no tax when flying to Hawaii. If you decide to go to Mexico, you will pay tax.

I hope this helps. I have used these many times. They are indeed jewels if you book very early on.

Thanks Mike. Boy she may have a hard time then. She got these bonus travel tickets in March of this year when she was bumped off of a flight to John Wayne airport during spring break week here in Washington. I'll give her the info and hopefully she can find something. If not Hawaii maybe Southern Calif.

I don't know that particular airline's policies. However, I had a United bump ticket. It needed to be booked within a year, but the travel could be an additional year out. I was bumped from a flight last June, 2007. On Christmas Eve 2007 I was at the airport (I needed to go in person to book the ticket) so I booked a trip to Phoenix for my husband for Sept 2008.

I'd check to see if you needed to take the trip within a year or if you needed to book it within a year.

Good luck.

Sue
