We attended Maui Academy of Arts musical performance of Fiddler on the Roof Sun Mar 9th in their Steppingstone Playhouse in the Queen Ka'ahumanu Center.
If you like musicals and you miss this performance for the next two weekends shame on you.
The cast includes some breathtakingly beautiful women, wonderful singing by all, great orchestra, and an oriental 8-9 year old violin genius playing the hauntingly beautiful theme song.
Tevye is brilliantly and realistically payed by Gary Shin-Leavitt.
The parallels between Gary's family history and Tevye's are uncanny. His Great Grandfather and Grand Father came from poor peasant stock with cows, just as Tevye has and made their own cheese, cream, and butter just as Tevye does.
When Gary's Grandfather was a young man, he received word that a pogram was planned for the shtetl, so he packed up and moved to America with his wife Jennie and Gary's Great Grandparents.
In the early 1930s when word trickled into the US that Jews in Europe were again being aggressively persecuted, his Great Grandmother went back to help her family escape. She was never heard from again, lost in the vast machinery that was the extermination camp system of the Third Reich.
