We are looking at trying to Interval exchange six Marriott Summit Watch 2 BR units for for 6 units in Breckenridge (Mountain Valley Lodge) or Vail (StreamSide) during the summer of 2021 for a family reunion. Does anyone know the likelihood of being able to get six units at either one of those resorts? I can’t tell how large they are. Also, it looks like Breckenridge may just have studio and 1 BR units. Is that right? Are there any non-Marriott timeshares that we ought to consider in the area?

Thanks for the help!

Breckenridge is a real town from the mining era. Vail is a ski town.

Mountain Valley Lodge only has studio and one bedroom units. It’s a nice resort in town near restaurants and shopping, but it’s small by Marriott standards. It share the pool/hot tubs with Hyatt Main Street Station. I don’t know if MVC owners can trade into a Hyatt without paying an exchange fee, but the Hyatt might be a better choice.

The best resorts on the mountain in Breckenridge are the Grand Resorts timeshares. They have four but the in,y three I’d consider are Grand Timber, Grand Lodge on Peak 7 and Grand Colorado on Peak 8. Of those Grand Colorado is closest to MVC standards. Grand Lodge is very nice and was built to feel more like a mountain lodge. Grand Timber is closest to town and has the larger units.

We’ve stayed at all three and we use to own at Grand Lodge before moving up to Grand Colorado because it’s closer to MVC standards. However, for a big family reunion, I’d be tempted to go after Grand Timber. Nice resort, great hot tubs, pretty views, walking distance to town but far enough away from town. Probably the easiest to get in exchange.

I have pictures of all of the, except the Hyatt, which we have never stayed in.

Vail also has the Ritz Carlton timeshares...part of Marriott vacation club.
Vail may have started as a ski town, but it has evolved.
Higher end and better everything.

For that many units, I would agree that Grand Timber Lodge in Breckenridge is your best bet. I also prefer Breckenridge to Vail in the summer months, but either is great summer location.

The Marriott (Evergreen building) in Vail is sort of isolated. Not close to the main action of the ski resort (and not as nice as the Marriotts in Park City). Breckenridge is much more similar to the Main Street Park City feel.

I can't speak to the likelihood of getting this exact exchange but getting 6 units or more the exact same week is dicey at best. For somewhere like Vegas, Grande Vista or Branson I wouldn't worry but for this situation, it sounds risky to me. I've done this many units and more for exchange for some off season situations and certainly it's a lower demand than top ski weeks but if you can do shoulder summer your chances will increase. If it's all or nothing you can call II and see if they will set it up to get the 6 or none but that dramatically reduces your chance of success. If you're set on making this happen get your requests in now for the week and resort you chose and hope for the best but make a backup plan, maybe rentals you can cancel. You might be better off renting out your weeks then renting the weeks you want instead. I assume these weeks are not enrolled, DC points would be a more certain choice over exchanging even if "more costly". Good luck, let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the advice. We do this every two years and have had pretty good luck in the past at a variety of Marriott properties, but every market/property is definitely different. We are hoping to put our requests in soon and see how it goes.

The fear of travel may help you right now. For Vail you might get different buildings with no options to group the units. We do a larger family trip about 3 out of 4 years, generally with at least 10 2BR. We just got back from a trip with fourteen 2BR units at Grande Ocean but we own 9 there. We had the rest on points but exchanges came through clearly and only due to the travel concerns of many, so we canceled the points reservations. Most years we do this there (which is most of our family trips), we get maybe 1 exchange. On a normal year I can't think of any resort we go to at the time's we tend to travel where this is workable outside of those I mentioned. It certainly wouldn't be possible for HHI in the summer other than maybe at Harbour Pointe. If you have that volume of Marriott's all in one account and they are not enrolled, you may want to consider that option depending on the resort and weeks you have. That way you'd have control and other options.

We spent a week at the Evergreen in Vail last summer. The Vail MVC resort has very little to distinguish it. We found Vail itself to be boring. My wife and I much prefer Park City. When we were in Vail we drove over to Breckenridge. As an old mining town it’s very similar to Park City. We will be in Breck in August at the Mountain Valley Lodge for a week. If we like it, we’ll come again next year but try a different resort.

I recommend avoiding the Marriotts in Breck or Vail, because they are both a step down from the Summit Watch. Yes, Breck Marriotts only has studios and 1 bedrooms. Neither is bad - simply average and not at the level of Summit Watch. Also, the Marriott at Vail requires a car as its not close to anything

At Breck, you want to exchange to either Grand Lodge at Peak 7, Grand Colorado at Peak 8, or the Hyatt Main Street Station. At Vail, you want to exchange to the Ritz if you are part of DC.

I agree with the Ritz Club if you can get it. It is fabulous. The other Marriott’s in Vail and Breckenridge are below par compared to most Marriott units. The Hyatt beaver Creek is nice. The Marriott in Breckenridge is a great location, though.

which building at mountain valley do you recommend?

I prefer the buildings next to Maggie’s Pond. Those would be the low rise buildings instead of the two high rise buildings
