Bought [Starwood] timeshare- now having doubts...

If you have doubts about your ownership, best to take your loss and sell your week or points.

Other options for use or rental are also available.

Comments?

Hi London - he is still within the rescission period and a few posts up, he reported that he rescinded today, so there will be no loss.

Yes I am a Starwood owner, but not part of SVN. We spent months mulling over a purchase through the developer and that "guarantee" was something that was very attractive to us. They have a term for it - but basically if you cannot get a week you are looking for - they will offer you something "similar" in another property they own. (With your star points of course) Starwood owns several differnt brands encompassing many different types of properties. If you can't get in to the timeshare you want to book you might be looking at a stay in one of their alternate properties. We found a re-sale at a voluntary resort so we bought at a fraction of the cost.

Hi again Jennifer - I hate to tell you this, but you were misled by a timeshare salesman...don't feel bad, we've all been there. That guarantee just doesn't exist.

For one thing, you have to convert to Starpoints by the end of March, and you can only do it every other year.

Even if you do convert to points, they don't give you nearly enough for an equivalent stay at a hotel. For instance, my 2 bdm. on Maui, isn't even worth enough points for a week in a standard room at the Maui Westin or Sheraton Hotels.

Starwood leaves it completely up to the owner to make their own reservations or exchanges and they will not bail you out if you can't find what you want.

For more info. about how Starwood works, check out the Owner Resources sticky at the top of this page.

However - you were smart buying resale! I own at SDO too, but so far have only rented it out. How do you like it? Has it been a good exchanger.?

Hope you will be a regular here!

I've heard time and time again that if I book within my home resort priority period, I'm guaranteed my view. Obviously the numbers don't work, so I do wonder how they could make this claim.

Does anyone have anecdotal evidence of trying to book at their home resort during the home resort priority booking period and being denied their view/villa?

thanks for the info...

Those darn sneaky salespeople! We have friends who own at Westin Kierland and they bought from the developer and they were treated like gold (of course)- and have had no trouble finding a week wherever, whenever they want. They are angry they payed 40k +++ and I only paid $1,500. They had a last minute trip to Maui recently, and couldn't get in to the Westin, so they got the Sheraton instead (hotel room).

Our resale has done well on the II circut. We have always gotten a good exchange - we just returned from the Gardens at West Maui over Christmas week. We've traded for Marriot in Orlando, a 4 seasons in New England... and I'd have to check my history for the rest. We love hanging out at SDO during the warm months because they allow day use of their pools. We live in the area, so we have never actually stayed there. We took the "tour" and received a free trip to Disneyland, and $100 GC to the mall, and movie tickets. We almost bought - we mulled for months, and then while searching ebay I realized I could find a better deal outside of the builder.
Boy was it difficult to walk away after the sales pitch! They almost had us - fortunately we had a very fussy baby with us, and we had to leave. Upon our departure they threatened us that once we walked out the door we could NEVER have such a good deal again. :) They literally followed us out to the parking lot. Poor things.

Good for you!!

I am glad you rescinded. I bought too and then rescinded, then bought resale for $3200, should have held out for better deal...darn it! Ha ha, well my resale is great, its a floating week that I can break up and use between Sheraton Vistana and Vistana Beach club. When I didn't trade it I would go for 2- vacations a year, 3 @ vistana beach and 4@ vistana in orlando. Now I use it as a pic week with my Wyndam resort which gives me 5 more vacations, and the best part is, I can bank with RCI or Interval. Definately in most cases try to buy resale, but if your needs support developer prices (which I purchased developer prices once) than do what's best for you.
