The thread discusses issues which strongly impact Ocean Club owners. To give you a very concise summary: Marriott bought a previous construction which they used for the Ocean Club and there were several issues with the roof, etc., which were never properly repaired and there was damage to the building because of on-going leaks. The side effects of Omar last fall caused further significant damage to the Ocean Club which neither the adjacent hotel or Surf Club suffered, likely due to these construction factors. Coupled with the need for some massive repairs, the OC is also due for its 10 year renovation. To fund these repairs and renovations, owners are being hit with a substantial special assessment this year and next and MF's have risen dramatically as well.
Many owners feel the Board has been less than upfront with them and they feel that Marriott has been treating owners unfairly. The thread is an on-going discussion of these issues and how to deal with them, with both extremes being suggested - from owners who love the resort and are ok to let things be to owners who are ready to take Marriott to court if necessary to make them pay for more of the needed repairs; discontented owners predominate the discussion.
Now that you have a fairly concise summary, I would surmise that if you are contemplating spending thousands of dollars purchasing two weeks there you would want to "waste" an hour reading the thread so as to be able to decide what's in your best interests. Aruba is a great destination and the Ocean Club a wonderful resort and, once redone, the property will be even nicer. But, it behooves you to be aware of what is going on and why some owners are angry enough to be selling.
Good luck. I can't wait for our visit to the SC next door in a few weeks!!!
