I hope that some Boston area Tuggers can give us some advice. We are going to be in Boston at the Marriott Common House starting on 3-31-2007. My son has a college interview at Holy Cross on Tuesday, 4-3-2007. Does anyone have advise on the best way for us to get to Worcester, Mass and/or Holy Cross from the Common House? How long do you think it will take us to get there? His interview is at 10:30 am.

We do not plan on having a rental car the entire time we are in Boston but plan on renting one for day-trips like this one.

Thanks

Sally Williams

Boston to Worcester

:( Though I wouldn't recommend this for your situation, there is a commuter rail train from Boston's South Station to Worcester's train station. It is a 1 hour and 15 minute train ride, leaving at 9AM and arriving in Worcester at 10:17AM. The cost is $7.75/person.

There is a train at 6:50AM arriving at 8:01AM. You still would need to get from the train station in Worcester to the college.

I would recommend that you rent a car for that day. Interstate 93 is right outside the Customs House. Go south on I93 to I90 connection (Mass Pike). Take this out to Worcester and then get directions to the college from the Mass Pike. This is the easiest and best way to get there. Worcester is not directly accessed via the Mass Pike, (don;t ask, it was a political issue here in Mass, the state's second largest city isn't accessible via the main highway in the state.)

Hope this helps. If you need more help, just send a PM.

I assume you plan to stay at the Custom House.

Yes, take the Mass Pike west from Boston. However, all of the turns can be a bit complex and you can easily get lost, missing the appointment. Thus, I would use www.Google.com/maps to "Get Directions" from the Custom House (3 McKinley Square, Boston , MA 02109) to Holy Cross (1 College Street, Worcester, MA 01610).

It should take about an hour to get there. However, to plan on time to find parking, locate the building for the interview and take into account the uncertainties of Boston-area traffic, especially on a weekday morning, I would allow at least 1:45.

You can print a map of the campus to aid your quest to locate the building for the interview.

No advice on driving in Boston (except to say it's pretty hairy)...just wanted to wish your son good luck on his interview!

The other option is to pay a couple bucks more and get a rental car with a GPS and just plug in Holy Cross... and off you go.

It's an easy and actually rather pretty drive.

Firstly, good luck to your son. Holy Cross is my husband's alma mater (back in the 60s).

I am also interested in Boston Information as my daughter just enrolled at Boston University for the fall term. What is the Customs House? Is
this a timeshare? I know hotels are pretty expensive in Boston; we actually stayed in Lenox when we went for her college visits in the fall, but that's a pain to be that far away from the city.

Any info on reasonable housing in the Boston area will be greatly appreciate.

Thanks,

Joanne

Marriott's Custom House is a timeshare in downtown Boston, about a 10-minute taxi or subway ride from Boston University. It's a tough exchange during the summer, but it's relatively easy to trade in (through II) or find a Getaway during much of the winter.

There are many hotels just north of Boston off of Rt 93 that can get you into Boston in 10-15 minutes. You may want to search the Woburn hotels and Burlington or Lexington, MA.
