Borrowed from 2023 to complete 2022 reservation

On a more boring note, I was 30k points shy on a reservation for March of 22, and was able to borrow from 23. When I try to make a reservation now in 22 with 0 points, I get the warning.
I didnt know this was an option. I wonder then if I could maintain some points each year, to complete a booking by borrowing 2 years out.

According to the 2019 Club Wyndham Plus Members' Directory (an actual book!): "If you need additional points in the Use Year you are planning to travel to complete your vacation plans, you may borrow points only from the next available Use Year following the check-in date of your reservation. You may not borrow more points than you own in a single calendar year."
So I don't think you can borrow from 2 years ahead, unless maybe if you have an every-other-year ownership?

you may borrow points only from the next available Use Year following the check-in date of your reservation.

Or you can if you have already used the points in that following use year?

Part of the reason it doesn't mention borrowing from 2 years ahead is the the part in the actual book that you left off of your quote: "you have the option to borrow points from your next Use Year during the Express Reservation time frame" (bold mine). The book only allows for borrowing within 3 months of check-in. However, it is appropriate that if you are booking a 2022 reservation, the borrowed points would come from 2023, which is "the next available Use Year following the check-in date of your reservation." This would normally happen if you were booking a reservation in late 2021 for early 2022 and had used most/all of your 2022 points already. 2023 would be the use year you'd borrow points from.

The issue - or unpublished benefit, as it may be - is that it now seems to be possible to borrow to complete the last night of a reservation in the Standard reservation period. Inside the Express reservation period, you can borrow up to your entire next year's points if you wish, just as it's always been. In this sense, borrowing is now being treated exactly like renting. However, this has never (as long as I've been an owner, at least) been possible before. I don't know if it's a Covid modification, temporary or permanent, or what.

I dimly recall the ability to borrow to complete ((part of) the last night was in the directory at some point.
Not since I've been an owner.

2018-19 directory:
"Should you decide to travel at the last minute and realize that you may need additional points to complete your reservation, you have the option to borrow points from your next Use Year during the Express Reservation time frame."

2014-15, 2011-12, and 2009-10 directories (use the exact same language):
"Should you decide to travel at the last minute and realize that you may need additional points to complete your reservation, you have the option to borrow points from your next Use Year. This option is available when you are booking a reservation during the Express Reservation period, 90 days or less from your check-in date."

However, prior to 2017 the points credit pool functioned essentially as a borrowing tool. If you needed to "borrow" points from a future year, you'd just credit pool some or all of the points from that year and they'd become available for use immediately.

EDIT: As an example of how established the credit pool was as a borrowing tool, there was one year when I credit pooled points from a future year in order to use them in a current year, and it wasn't until after I'd done it and paid the $39 fee that I realized that I could have simply borrowed the points, because it was inside the 90 day mark, and saved the $39.

I just did an "experiment" to see what happens when I tried to make a reservation more than 3 mos. away and I was short of points. If the reservation was short only some points for the last day, it allowed me to borrow or rent. If I was short more than a day's points, it blocked the search saying I did not have enough points and would not allow me to proceed to the borrowing or renting screen.

It’s a good change, if it stays. There’s really no reason for borrowing not to be treated the same way as renting. It’s just weird that Wyndham hasn’t publicized it in any way - usually when they make a change they’re so quick to say “In order to simplify your ownership (blah blah blah)” even if the real effect is to diminish a feature (eg housekeeping). In this case it would truly simplify things by making the rules for renting and borrowing the same, but silence. I hope that doesn’t mean Wyndham will change it back on a whim.

Hmm. Maybe this is one of those things "everyone knows" from the old TS4M Wyndham owners group. But, for some reason, I had it in my head that "borrowing a portion (but not all of) of the last night's stay" was legal during any Standard Window reservation, and has been for years. But I can't say for sure I've ever done it. Instead, back before borrowed points were returned in their original year on cancel, I used to "wash" points by borrowing into an Express Window reservation, cancelling it, and booking the thing I wanted in the first place.

When I read your prior post I thought the same thing, but this post clarifies what we did back in the good ol' days...back when making multiple reservations in one day only required one reservation transaction

As an update, I just did this, and I'm pretty pleased with myself. [small potatoes point manipulation to follow]

I was booking a larger trip for next year, and I knew it would leave me with less than 100,000 points remaining in next year. However, I'm also hoping to make a DVC exchange for 2022, and I didn't want to have to rent from Wyndham or buy RCI points from another owner to get to 105,000 points if I didn't have to. So I made a dummy reservation in 2022 to tie up some points, made my main reservation using my remaining 2022 points and some borrowed from 2023, then canceled the dummy. Now I have enough in 2022 to make the RCI deposit when I need to.
