Booking codes for airlines

With all the confusing offers out there, many of them require that airplane bookings are in a certain booking code. Therefore, the necessity of determining the booking code. When I use ITA software, I can find the booking code, but I'm not so successful at the UAL website. Would someone more knowledgeable than me talk about booking codes- how to find them, what they mean, what effect they have other than to raise prices. Any insights would be helpful. Carmechanic- I've read many of your posts and you are very informed on these types of things. I would welcome your response especially.
