Booked before the new law on ticket prices took effect

We booked our flight to Cancun before the new laws on ticket prices containing the cost of Luggage went into effect.
Has anyone ever tried to mail their luggage to Cancun?

I don't know that airline ticket prices containing baggage fees have been implemented, just taxes and fees are now included in published prices.

Due to lack of interline agreements between USPS and Correo Mexico, I wouldn't attempt mailing my luggage there, but ymmv. You might check with UPS or if you are fortunate enough to have a DHL facility nearby (they are strong internationally, though they stopped US domestic service) you could get an estimate.

But shucks, you are going to Mexico. Pack light. You can walk on with 2 carry-ons each. We can travel in all climates indefinitely with just those.

Our cost to use DHL to deliver a document to Mexico was going to be well over $100.00--I don't remember how much because we decided to drive there and deliver it rather than pay the fee (obviously, not to Cancun). I suspect the cost of sending luggage would be eye opening.

Remember, Cancun isn't the end of earth. They sell hairspray, etc. there--lots cheaper than mailing the luggage.

The new law on ticket pricing doesn't change the luggage fees - it only means they can' advertise a stripped down price anymore. The airlines will honor whatever luggage fee schedule was in place at the time you booked your ticket. Go to the airline's website and search. Often you will see "Tickets purchased after MM/DD/YY and before MM/DD/YY" - with a fee schedule.

Keep in mind that a lot of airlines don't charge 1st bag charges for international flights either. I believe Delta and United fall into this category. Failing that, see if you have (or want to apply for) one of the airline rewards cards. I recently got the United Mileage Plus card with no annual fee for the first year because it would save me a ton of $$ in baggage fees for travel I have this year. Plus, you can rack up miles and hope for a free ticket on an upcoming trip!

TIP: Know in advance what your baggage fees are, especially if you purchased them a long time ago and are under a grandfathered clause. We had an issue on AA back in 2008. No ibaggage fees when I booked, but then the policy was changed. Departing the US, the ticket agent knew that and we were not charged. Leaving Turks & Caicos, the ticket agent was nasty and said I had to pay. I explained the policy and she wouldn't budge. So I paid it, and wrote a letter to AA customer service when I got home who promptly refunded the fee with an apology.

Spirit

Thanks all.. so does anyone know how to get around Spirit Air baggage fees? So far we found we can carry on backpacks. But all bags even carry on after that are charged. Not even one carry on suitcase is allowed. I thought I was being smart picking Spirit because last year when all our United flights were delayed cancelled or rerouted, the Spirit counter appeared to be on time and clear. Maybe it was just that no one had any bags to check?
