My husband finally had his gallbladder removed yesterday. The take-home instructions said to have bland foods for 10 days.

I think he's going to get tired of yogurt, bananas, toast, and chicken soup.

What are some other bland foods that would be good?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Didn't the hospital/dr provide a list? You could call and see what the hospital cafeteria puts on its bland food diet.

Meanwhile, maybe these would count: pudding, soft boiled or scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, applesauce. Maybe cream soups?

No, all the instructions say are to "resume normal diet, no hot/spicy/rich flavorful food/fatty for 10 days."

But calling the hospital cafeteria sounds like a good idea.

Boiled Chicken, Rice, potatoes, breads, oatmeal, and grits.

That's my bland diet from my GI doctor when my eating habits occasionally become my own personal hell. No spices, oils or butters, no fun, etc...

I find that I can usually handle some light salt and pepper with no ill effects.

Hope that helps ?!

EDIT: I don't think cream soups count as bland. They tend to fall under the "rich, flavorful' category, and they tear me up when i'm extra sensitive. Tomato soup is rough too, due to the intrinsic acid.

Thanks for that info on tomato soup! I was just looking in the pantry for what kinds of soup we have on hand--tomato soup is what we have the most of.

good point about the cream soups and tomato soup. But wouldn't grits be too - well - gritty? Is fiber to be avoided?

I think jello would be good.

Karen - get a Swedish or Norwegian cookbook.

I'm only half-joking. I've seen cookbooks that are compilations of cook's favorites from Norwegian Lutheran congregations in the Midwest. Those cookbooks are proof that "creatively bland" is not an oxymoron.

Who knew there were that many options for creating tuna-noodle casserole and jello salad?
