Background: We have bought developer weeks through Marriott as well as resale. We have been able to get great use out of II and Our sales rep is telling us that is ending with abound. We reluctantly agreed to buy points and then rescinded it. He told us tonight Marriott will blacklist us if we back out of the contract because we have been in to a lot of presentations and haven’t bought. We have spent lots of $ with Marriott and stayed over 800 nights and I feel like he is threatening us because we are backing out. Maybe I am seeing this wrong? Looking for feedback before I respond. Thanks in advance

Salesperson's lies. They will absolutely take your money at a later date.

It’s remotely possible that they’ll stop bribing you to attend sales presentations, but I doubt they’ll even do that. There is zero chance they will do anything else, or anything that impacts your ability to use your ownerships.

The fact that they got you to sign on the dotted line, even if you later rescinded, means they will still see you as a prospect and I’ll bet they’ll continue to entice you to attend presentations and buy more.

Imagine, Marriott International has "enabled" behaviors like your salesperson to destroy the Marriott brand name, and everything that it once stood for. I, personally, do not believe that the members of the Board of Directors of Marriott International realize what a liability Marriott Vacation Club is to them, and the Marriott brand name (but, M.I. clearly enjoys collecting their Licensing Fee from MVC, and whatever transactional revenues accompany it).

As is obvious, your salesperson is lying to you. In a heartbeat, I'd be communicating with the State Boards of Real Estate, and Consumer Affairs, and the State Attorney General, about this individual, and MVC. Finally, I'd hold the Board of Directors of MVC to task, with complaints to the Marriott International Board of Directors.

Imagine, this salesperson has been "enabled" to destroy a once, brand loyal, Marriott guest and customer, who has generously provided Marriott with 800 nights of trust, and revenue.

I'd be sure to never attend a MVC sales presentation, again, or to spend another penny with MVC, as you've "been burned" by MVC.

One more thought: DO NOT rescind through the sales rep you dealt with, or even through the resort where the presentation took place. You need to rescind following the exact process laid out in the document you should have received explaining your right of rescission, or the rescission process specified in the contract itself. It probably requires you to send a letter exercising your right to rescind, to an address in Florida. You should send that letter by certified mail, return receipt requested, so that you have proof of mailing and receipt. The letter must be mailed and postmarked before the end of the rescission period.

If you try to rescind by informing the salesperson or someone at the resort, there is a very good chance that your rescission WILL NOT BE HONORED because you have not followed the proper process for rescinding. People have been burned in this way in the past.

I'm telling you all this because it sounds like you've had a conversation with your sales rep about rescinding, and there is no reason to talk to the salesperson about your decision. They aren't the one who can help you rescind and they probably won't do so – even if they claim they will.

"Looking for feedback before I respond"

Why respond to the sales rep at all?
Your decision to rescind was sound
Your life will be happier the less contact you have with him
Follow the advice given in the post above

Look, I've rescinded 5 or 6 times over the years and survived. I just don't get a free beach towel anymore. They do continue to invite us to presentations, and they do lock us to the table. I guess they just like us.

A tip: Don't take your wallet or credit cards to your sales presentation.

If that’s true, we’d have been blacklisted a long time ago. We’ve rescinded a couple of contracts once I had a minute to sit down, think about it and decided the deal just wasn’t good enough.

A salesman will tell you whatever it takes to get you to. Are a purchase, then whatever it takes to protect his commission and get you to keep the co tract you’ve decided isn’t in your best interest.

This salesperson, like all MVC salespersons, earns a commission based upon the amount of sales. In turn, MVC's revenues and profits are based upon the amount of sales. Do you really think that this salesperson and MVC will "cut off their nose to spite their face"? By the way, we have rescinded on a number of occasions and are still constantly urged to attend "owners' updates".

We followed the contract and rescinded as described but since then he has called both my wife and I repeatedly, he has also emailed asking for an explanation. I have given him the reasoning again and that is when he brought up blacklisting.

Does anyone have any information or statistics regarding Abound pulling Marriott inventory out of II? That would be concerning for us. I know II gets its inventory from owners like us depositing but the salesperson is saying with Westin and Sheraton coming in, the exchanges we have had in the past won’t be there anymore.

Block the number, mark the email address as spam, and move on. If you want to be petty about it, also complain to Marriott owner services that a sales agent has been badgering you about a legally rescinded purchase. You DO NOT OWE THE AGENT AN EXPLANATION.

Honestly? After how the sales agent has been treating you, why are you giving them any credence whatsoever?

If and when that happens, then you can solve that problem. Don't solve a problem that you don't have yet.

So glad I found this place! Thank you for all of the replies.

You don't owe the sales person a reason. That is just their way to find a way to chip away at your defenses and get you to change your mind. Block the number, ignore the calls. You are under no obligation to talk to the sales person. They are just trying to save their commission.

I've now rescinded twice and I am always invited to sales presentations. I've also recently found inventory availability in II better than ever.

I have seen a very few instances of people being blacklisted and we have never arrived at the cause or method. It most certainly is not up to the salesperson. There are a number here that would like to figure out how to join that club though.

Invaluable advice!

My best advice, do not, ever again, have another conversation with that salesperson or his/her leadership.

For that matter, as a practice, I'd give very serious consideration to never attending a sales presentation, again. I suspect that you'll be fine, without Marriott's Food Stamps.

Marriott has owned Westin and Sheraton for years now (I am talking about the timeshare side here) as well as owning Interval. If Marriott was going to change how deposits into Interval were done, it would have happened by now.

Sadly, I think we HAVE seen some of that.

In our experience, nearing 40 years of multiple week MVC ownership, and II membership, the deposits to I.I. have DEFINITELY CHANGED (for the worse) since the advent of the Destination (points currency) Club.

I can assure you the blacklist-if it exists-consists of a great group of people. Happily join!

This might just be due to MVC owners opting to choose DPs instead of exchanging thru interval. Almost like them opting to use their week instead of exchanging thru interval. Which is owner driven. Whereas Westin Owners is another subset which do not compete for the same at the same time correct? Or is Marriott diverting weeks deposited by owners to the trust?

First-- they do get a print out that shows how many presentations you've been to -- and if you've bought. In my experience, the sales reps only give that a quick glimpse. But don't worry, you will not be "blacklisted."

Second-- I do agree the inventory in Interval has diminished. I'm not seeing nearly as many Marriott options... and have even noticed fewer listed in Orlando! Marriott properties are still there, but not as many. I would argue that it has been an evolution... now that people are more comfortable with points, more are electing points rather than simply depositing a week in Interval. At the same time, I do think Marriott is not bulk dumping inventory into Interval like in the past. Rather, I think Marriott is keeping them and offering 3 and 4 night stays for points in units that would have previously been dumped into Interval to use as getaways. Again, I'm using Orlando as an example because it's an easy illustration. It used to be there were PLENTY of Marriott/Sheraton options in Orlando as getaways and bonus weeks. Now there are fewer (haven't disappeared totally) Marriott getaway options-- and they're more expensive. Finding a Marriott using an Interval Bonus week/AC is almost impossible.... which does greatly diminish the allure of depositing my week into Interval since the bonus weeks are basically worthless to me. The now worthless bonus week offers may be another reason why there is less depositing in Interval and the weeks end up in the point inventory.

Based on the trend I've observed, it appears that they tend to release more units in Interval at the last minute when they anticipate low rental demand.

If I had a nickel for every time a salesman told me I wouldn’t be able to get the trades I had been getting, I could buy another timeshare……..retail
