Birds Nest under Air Conditioner

For years I heard small birds (sparrows) hang out under my air conditioner. Would look from time to time but then they would just fly away. This year they have been pretty consistent and it drives my cat nuts. At this point he has gotten used to the commotion.

I decided to walk around and check and now there is a full blown nest out there between the bottom of the AC unit and the outside sill!

I would feel terrible if I just removed the the AC unit and cleaned out the nest. I am sure there are baby birds there.

Most likely I will just wait until the weather gets colder in the fall/winter and then remove the nest.

What would you do?

If there are no babies or eggs yet I would remove the nest. I would let the nest alone until the babies fly otherwise, even if it's the squawking House Sparrows.

This unit is located on the 3rd level. I can see the nest from a window in the next room, and from the ground. The only other way to look in the nest is if I remove the AC unit.

When the adult birds stop going in an out, the babies are either gone or dead. You will have until next spring to remove it. They don't return after the babies fledge.

This is what makes Billy a good guy, imo. This should add to your already good karma.

Some fool bird built a nest in a chair on our lanai (veranda) that we built for our use.
We saw a egg, so now we're not allowed to grill, dine or relax out there. :(

:hysterical:

In your case, imo, the birds are actually in the way. Get out your shop vac and clean it up then go burn some meat. ;)

At my place, the birds that build nests in areas that don't really bother me get to stay but when they nest in my bbq's they needs to go.

Borrow a cat ... dinner for cat gets you BBQ dinner for you! ;)

I would wait too. In fact, that's what I did when we had birds build a nest right by our front door. They were so messy I hated it but I just waited them out and when the babies were on their own we went in there and destroyed the nest and blocked it off so they can't go back.

My trouble is they built a nest on top of my metal porch light. I can't see in to see if there are eggs or baby birds or anything. I suspect it is now abandoned but it isn't hurting anything so I'm letting it be for now.

Sorry about your lanai. At least you'll be able to tell when they are gone.

We had a robin who would see its reflection on our patio door, get mad and then start fighting its reflection. This went on for some time because the robin was an early bird, much earlier than me. The robin would crap all over the place. Finally I managed to put up a sheet so the robin left the patio door area. In the next couple of days this robin saw its reflection in my newly waxed suv and put a few scratch marks as well as bird crap on my vehicle.

Now that I think about it I am constantly tormented by birds. Up in the mountains the other year a blue jay ate my sandwich. In Hawaii there were many doves who would make a racket as the sun came up. Seagulls are always trying to steal my bait. A few years back someone lost their rooster and it ended up close enough to my house that it would wake me in the morning. Just last week I waxed my truck and before the next morning a bird crapped on it.

I guess the topper is the old lady who cut me off and flipped me the bird. All I did was get out of her way and smiled. This actually made my day as she is my buddies mom. :D

Last year we had a bird build a nest and had her babies in a corner eave area on our patio where we sit all the time. Sometimes the bird would buzz us when we were sitting on “our patio”. :) I liked hearing the babies chirping. We let them have their nest and the mess, but this year my husband filled that area and a few others with spray foam to keep them away. It worked.
