All,

Am off to the Big Island in three weeks, and am curious if anyone knows if the whales have arrived. I saw a news article from December that indicated the whales had not yet shown up (anywhere) but can't find anything more recent.

Any local knowledge? Thanks!

Best,

Greg

Greg; Currently on Kauai and I can tell you that they are everywhere here as of our boat ride yesterday afternoon. They were breaching and jumping everywhere we looked.

The captain commented that Thursday 1/14/2016 was the most whale activity he has seen this year.

Best to you!

We have been on the Big Island for the last 2 weeks. We are seeing some humpback whales from shore, but mainly a long way out.
However, did a boat trip to Captain Cook Monument yesterday and en-route saw a pod of 5 Pilot whales and then a group of 3 Blainville whales which are apparently extremely rare. Our captain was incredibly excited. She had the sighting confirmed by the University of Hawaii.

Humpbacks are around...

...they are starting to show up on the Big Island. Consistent daily sighting north of Kawaihae Harbor at mile marker 4.

Looking forward to your trip report. Going to June and a little concerned about the mosquito fever. Thx.

Good News For Sure!

We're leaving this Friday for Hawaii . . . a few days on Oahu (for work) and then a few more days over at Kauai. We're doing a boat trip out with Capt Andy's (the Sunset Dinner Cruise).

They had this whale very close to their boat this past week, on 1/13/16.

I cannot wait!

We just got back from the Big island about 3 weeks ago....never even saw a mosquito! We did dutifully spray down with Deep Woods Off every morning, then forgot about it and had a great time! We were all over the Island....stayed in Waikaloa, Kona And Volcano NP...all wonderful :)

Yes, we've been tracking this, but when we went to Nassau/HRA in 2014, they had an outbreak of Chikungunya, so we ingrained in the kids that we spray frequently. I've reminded them that we will be spraying again and will keep fingers crossed...

Thanks for the news on the whales, very excited to see them!

Best,

Greg

Not happymum, but we've taken the Fair Wind mornig snorkel cruise out of Kealakekua Bay to Captain Cook's monument several times. I notice they now have a combined snorkel cruise and BBQ lunch in addition to the deluxe morning cruise.

I usually spot the whales around the pool with a giant, sugary drink in their hands.

Sorry for the delay in replying, was making the most of our last few days!
Our trip was with Big island Divers. It was on a Zodiac (which I like) without a roof (which I didn't). I have also done the Fair-Winds boat and barbecue and didn't care for it. A large boat with many people, most not interested in snorkelling- their water-slide was getting a big work-out though. K-Bay is such a gorgeous place, it seems a pity to have a party boat in the middle of it.
As to mosquitos, we didn't see one and were somewhat lax about using the copious amounts of spray that we had taken.

would love to hear the review and details; we're there the first two weeks in Feb and considering a boat trip!

We had the sunset dinner cruise (on the big boat) planned last year but too choppy, so we cancelled.
cheers
