Best time to buy

I want to buy a timeshare resale. Is there a best time of year to do buy resales? Thanks.

I don't really know - but now in general may be a good time if people are skittish about the economy & high fuel prices.

Best Time To Buy Resale Is Now

Resale prices are at record lows currently. Many good buys on Ebay.

80% of timeshares on Ebay have little to no value. The 20% of timeshares that do have some value are selling at low prices.

Since there are thousands and thousands of weeks for sale, it is a buyers market.

My suggestion is to purchase a high quality timeshare, in a desirable beach location.

End of Year?

My guess would be that the best time is at the end of the year when owners are getting bills for taxes, maintenance fees, holiday expenses, etc.

But you never know when a bargain will pop up - so I like to follow what is listed at Redweek. If you sign up they send you an email every time a new listing is posted.

The best time to buy is when you find the unit for the price you want to pay. Don't wait until a particular time period to look for the unit at the price you want. Keep looking always. This is the best way to educate yourself on current prices.

I was thinking that prices actually seem a little higher right now for the areas I'm interested in...maybe because people are thinking about summer vacations.

Just set up a search on eBay for the resort / Company you want to get. When you see something you like, put in a bid if you have vetted the seller through TUG. Most start at under $100 with some Mexican resorts Like Raintree Club Regina starting at $1.

I have done that in the past for Club Regina and I get a hit at least three times a week (although some are for memorabilia from the Regina Canada Curling Club).

Should I Do This

I like to take a good trip every other year with my son and his family and have done home-exchanging. But finding exchangers isn't easy for where I live. It occurs to me that owning a trade-able 2-3 br timeshare would give us a good way to have flexibility in choosing where to go. I'm thinking in terms of a resale under $10k that would be tradeable. Any advice on where and what to buy? Are Orlando and Myrtle Beach not as popular as before?

Tozbeach, You may want to look at www.vrbo.com for rentals. Your idea has value, but if you want the flexibility of small unit/big unit, various locations, perhaps something like the Wyndham points system would work. These are selling resale at reasonable prices.

I suppose Orlando and Myrtle Beach are popular, judging by how (imho) are overbuilt with TS.

I didn't mean to hijack the thread. Anytime is a good time to buy resale, but the selection might be greater after summer ends, and before the annual MFs come due.

Buying a Points Resale

Thanks for your informative reply. I'm a little ignorant about the points system concept. I presume that you buy a set number of points and have the same # to use each year. Is that correct? If so, what is a good number of points to own in order to ensure you can get a 2-3 br location when you want it? What do points see for new -- and thus, what is a decent resale price for the right amount of points? Thanks
