Hi all,

I'm using my one free night from Visa card to go to DC for a weekend. I don't want to stay in the city since the parking rate is so high. What is the best Residence Inn (I like the big rooms and free breakfasts) nearby?

Thanks!

We did the same thing, my husband earned two free nights with the summer promotion. We stayed at the Residence Inn Washington, DC/Vermont Avenue 1199 Vermont Avenue for the weekend and it was great. We parked our car in their lot ($25 a night) and walked to everything. We had tickets to the White House and advance tickets to the Washington Monument. I'm really glad I ordered the Washington Monument tickets ahead of time since tickets were so hard to come by on the day we planned on visiting the monument. The rangers were turning people away because they didn't have tickets. The tickets are usually gone within the first hour, once they start handing them out for that day.

We had a great time, I'm really glad we stayed down in the city, it was a different experience.

We LOVED the one at 333 E. Street. It is right around the corner from a train station, and it is within reasonable walking distance of the east end of the mall.

This is the one we stayed at for a week this past summer. We actually drove our two-week rental in from our Williamsburg stay, unloaded the lugged at the hotel, then I drove to Reagan to drop the rental off, then took the train back to the hotel to meet up with the family.

This RI is a very easy walk to the National Air Space Museum as well as the Capitol Building.

Was it easy getting your White House tickets? We tried both our senators about six months in advance and had no luck - we are from Calif and visited this past July. Not sure if these two points matter in how difficult or easy to obtain the White House tix.

Hmmm, we got tickets pretty easily through our Congressman. According to the aide, it was a no-brainer, it was just a matter of him setting it up.

All the Residence Inns outside DC in Virginia are nice. You still have to pay for parking at many of the closest ones though. There are 2 in Arlington which have free shuttles to and from the airport and you can take the subway into DC from these. The following link will take you to the list:

If you are staying outside of DC you definitely want to be within walking distance to a subway stop as traffic in and out of DC is pretty bad, it can take a long time on a bus, and cabs are expensive.

In Virginia, the Arlington and alexandria areas are your best bet.

We've stayed at Residence Inns in both Falls Church, VA and Springfield, VA. Both were very nice. Falls Church was close to a metro station, I'm not sure about the one in Springfield since we didn't go into the district on our visits there. We were visiting family in VA.

Neither of these locations charged for parking.

I liked the one in Alexandria, though the studio room was smaller than a lot of the ones I've seen. It was also a little darkish walking the couple of blocks from the Metro alone at night.

I've stayed at the Residence Inn Capitol Hill and you can park on the streets for free on the weekends. The RI is right around the corner from the police station and very safe.

If you want to stay outside the city, try:

Residence Inn Pentagon City
Residence Inn Old Town Alexandria

Both are right off the metro line and in good areas.

Anyone have any recommendations for Residence Inns just outside of the city?

We've stayed at the Old Town RI a number of times, and found it to be very nice. It's about 3 blocks to the Metro, in a safe area. Free parking (I think) in a secured garage. Plus they have a shuttle which will take you to Old Town restaurants/sites, might even take you to/from the Metro. Very convenient.

Enjoy your stay!

I emailed one of our senators and within a couple of days they answered me with some security questions that they needed in order to submit to the White House staff. I got my ticket information in about 4 weeks.

I've never stayed there, but the location is pretty good. You will be close to the Orange line on the metro and you could walk to Georgetown over the Key Bridge if you really wanted to.

If picking around that area, I would opt for the one in Courthouse. It is very new still and the area is very nice with a lot of shops and restaurants within easy walking distance. It is about two blocks to the Orange line one stop from Rosslyn.

Having responded to this post a couple times, it occurs to me that you should probably think about what metro stop you want to be near and do it that way.

Orange will take you across to DC in the area of George Washington University then up to M Street and over to metro center where you can make a lot of transfers quite easily. It also has a stop at the Smithsonian. You can transfer at Rosslyn to the blue line to Arlington Cemetary, etc.

Old Town is on the yellow/blue lines, Capitol Hill is on green, etc.

Look at this link:

We will be driving only. We will go to the zoo the first day and george washington house the second. We can not stay in alexandria as the only availability sleeps 3 and we have four.

How about the one in Rosslyn?

I work right next door. It is in a safe area within walking distance to the Rosslyn metro. I park in their garage sometimes. It is $8 before 9am. I am not sure about guest parking though. There are plenty of meter parking nearby. You can probably park on the street for free during weekends. Let me know if you need more info.

I stayed at the Roslyn Location with my Family. Good Location. We parked the car at the hotel (fee) and took the metro every where. But if your driving this location was hard to find with the GPS and small twisting side streets. There's a Whole Foods nearby.

Last August we stayed at Residence Inn Alexandria Old Town. We used points and had 2 2 bedroom suites. The hotel is clean and in a good location. Only 2 city blocks from the train station to D.C. Close to Reagan airport, you can take the train to/from the hotel. They have a shuttle to the train station but it is almost faster to walk. Whole foods is only a short walk away and on many nights we got dinner there after a long day of sightseeing in D.C. Very convenient. Hotel breakfast is good but long lines on the weekends. The free internet (wired and wireless) was pretty fast. Next time when we go to D.C. we'll definitely stay there again.
I had no luck getting tickets to the White House even though I requested them months in advance thru my congressman.
