Best options for skiing?

We have been doing a ski vacation 1x per year mostly in January to various western resort towns, mostly on the EPIC system. I'm starting to think that a timeshare, for the right price, might be a more cost effective way to getting out west. We typically spend quite a bit ($5k+) on accommodations for fairly short periods of time (~4 days).

A few quick searches on resorts seemed to point towards Marriott as these seem to be a better match for our towns. Would appreciate any advice if this is correct or if other options would be better. If MVC is the right match, what resources should I use to get up to speed on the systems? Where to look for reasonable deals and how do you even know if a deal is reasonable?

1) Is there a vacation destination you wish to visit most of the time or on a regular basis? if so where?
- EPIC system towns, mostly in CO - Breckenridge, Vail, Beaver Creek; Also - Park City, Whistler

2) Do you want to visit your home resort at least half the time, or do you want to trade more than half the time?
Probably would be fine with home resort > 50%, especially if it were Breck, Vail or Beaver

3) What are your 5 top trade destinations?
- Other Ski Towns
- Hawaii
- Mexico

4) How many people do you usually travel with - total, including yourself?
- Typically travel with our 2 younger kids - 14 and 18; Sometime our adult children (23 and 26) travel with us. So 4-6

5) Can you travel any time, or are you locked into the school schedule?
- Still mostly tied to school schedules (both high school and college). We like to ski right after New Years, when the calendars work well. Sometimes ski during spring break (March).
- Note that this is changing for us as our kids get older and independent

6) Can you make firm plans 12 or more mos. in advance?
- Yes

7) Can you vacation for a full week at a time?
- Yes, for the right weeks

8) What level of accommodations do you prefer on a scale of 1 to 5 stars?
- Love 5 star if it's available, but OK with 3.5 or more. Wife is happier with 4+.

9) How much can you afford to spend upfront, without financing?
- $20k; would value (and pay more for) upfront costs that reasonably held their value

10) How much can you afford to spend every year for a maintenance fee that will come due right after Christmas, and increase each year?
- $3-4k; more than this would make me question where the value would be vs. renting

11) Are you a detail oriented planner?
- Yes - I'm the guy that sets his watch 24 hrs + 1 min the day before a Southwest flight to get the best free seat group possible!

12) Do you understand that once you buy a timeshare, it may be very difficult to sell or give away, and you are responsible for all fees, until you do?
- Yes, I've learned that much so far at least! This said, I'd value resale and would be willing to pay a little more to get something that I could sell in 5-10 years if we didn't end up using it.

Marriott has two timeshares in Park City -- Mountainside and Summit Watch. Both meet your specs.

Marriott also has two timeshares at South Lake Tahoe (Heavenly) -- Timber Lodge and Grand Residence Club. They also meet your specifications, but I don't recommend skiing California snow if Utah or Colorado is available.

Marriott also has resorts in Colorado with which I am not familiar; others will surely inform you.

I am an Avid skier. Epic pass this year. I alternate years between Epic and Ikon. I skied 3 weeks in Colorado and 1 week in Whistler this season.

You are not going to find 5 star timeshares. Most of the Marriotts, Westins and Sheratons at ski hills are rated 4 plus on Google and Tripadvisor reviews, but this does not make them a 4 star resorts, and certainly not 5 star. 4 and 5 star hotels are all about the levels of service and amenities. Now for the good news.

I think a timeshare will work for you and is attainable at a price point well below your proposed budget. Given your preferred locations (Whistler excepted), a Marriott Legacy resale week would be your best bet. Buy a 2 bedroom lock-off which gives you the option to lock-off and get two trades or use the whole two bedroom where you need the trading power to perhaps land a school holiday week. This all assumes trading in Interval, but can also include utilizing your home week if purchasing at a ski resort. The early January weeks are an easy trade. March weeks are not to difficult to land with planning. President's day week, and February in general, are more challenging, but are doable with advance planning, which seems to suit your approach.

Following this course of action will force you into booking full weeks vs your current 4 days; however, your cost per week should be less than half (and even lower) than your current 4 day expenditures. You do not need to stay the full week.

You should be able to pick-up a resale Marriott legacy week in the $1000 to $5000 range, depending on what you are buying. The higher end of that range will be the purchase of a ski week at brand name resort. The lower end acquistion cost would be a Marriott that is known to trade well but has a lower cost of acquistion and ideally lower maintainence fee. Marriot Grand Chateau and Marriott Grand Vista two bedroom lock-offs immediatley come to mind. Budget $2000 per year for MF.

My cost this season was in the range of $1100 - 1200 USD per ski week for a two bedroom unit.

Whistler is a tougher trade. I have generally had better luck landing Whistler weeks with RCI points, which the above startegy will not work for.

I agree that timeshares are great for ski trips on the mountain. I realized this when I was already paying $400+ per night for a regular hotel room.

Since you are interested in staying less than a week and like to ski the week after New Years, Abound Points can also be an option. It's fewer points to ski before MLK weekend. I also usually stay one night in Denver to adjust to the altitude and book on the mountain from Sunday to Thursday, which is even fewer points.

Here is an example of the points needed for Summit Watch in Park City Utah:

I have been using HGVC to ski at both Breckenridge (Valdoro Mtn Lodge) and Park City (Sunrise Lodge) for many years now. Since I was able to start trading in DEX last May, I have been also able to book Panorama in 2025 (not on EPIP pass) and Whistler in 2026. Now, I do own ski weeks at both Valdoro and Sunrise, but I am able to get 3-4 ski weeks per year.

edited to add: I know that TS have certainly saved me money on all of my ski vacations. It has allowed me better accommodations, more bedrooms which has allowed me to bring family and friends. If you are interested in discussing further, feel free to PM me.

Epic is well aligned with MVC resorts. We are currently at Mountainside in PC for our kid's spring break. We traded into a 2BR for a week using a mid- Shadow Ridge studio week. I estimate the total cost for this to be $1K. We routinely trade in to Tahoe and here every year. We usually go the week after New Years or spring break (mid to late March). I would buy a Marriott at one of these resorts where you can alternate between staying in your week and trading.

This, case in point, is exactly what I was talking about. Also quite a valid point regarding the alignment of the Epic pass with Marriott works well.

A Sheraton trader can work as well, but doesn't always align with Epic. Sheraton Steamboat being a fantastic trade, but it is on the Ikon pass. I traded one of my small 1 bedroom Sheraton Desert Oasis ("SDO") units for a ski in/out three bedroom at the Sheraton Steamboat last season. Location is the best I have ever had. This season I secured two consecutive weeks at the Sheratons in Avon (Beaver Creek - Epic Pass), again with my little SDO trader.

This method, which @davidvel has aptly described, requires advance planning. This suits the OP's inclinations. If you plan in advance, and have a bit of flexibility year over year where you are going, you will get great accommodations at great ski hills for very little $$. The early New Years weeks are easy

Many thanks for the great replies! You've given me a lot to look into and research. Hope you don't mind me asking a few more questions along the way!

+1 for HGV Sunrise Lodge in Park City. Just stayed there and the location is good and about to be great starting with winter 2025/26. With the new Sunrise Gondola opening right outside Sunrise Lodge, it’ll become even more convenient and true ski-in/out. Check this out:

There are a couple of nicer timeshares in Breckenridge and Jackson Hole. If you’re interested in learning more about Teton Club in Jackson Hole, feel free to reach out. We own there and I would rate it 5 stars for the quality of accommodation and probably 4.5 overall, since there are fewer amenities on site (although the location in the ski village and partnership / benefits with the Teton Pines country club in the summer makes up for the lack of onsite amenities). That said, JH is not on the EPIC pass. Ownership at Teton Club does include 2 ski passes when you stay there - a nice benefit for those that don’t buy season passes.
